Since the beginning of the 2000s, bands have become obsolete, with single artists taking over the music industry. Despite this, today’s teenagers should listen to the bands of the past, as their music is superior to anything coming out today.
Popular bands such as The Eagles had five members while the Beatles had four main members, with their own unique talents that were brought together to make the most notable songs during their time. The best example of the two is the Beatles: Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, all of whom went on after the band split and made even more music that still has a heavy influence in today’s world.
Also, bands like Guns N’ Roses had popular instrumental players who were popular outside the band. Saul Hudson, known as “Slash,” was the lead guitarist for the band; his popularity alone is enough for him to sustain a music career. Despite Guns N’ Roses falling apart, Slash has still had appearances at major music events such as the 2026 Grammys.
Music groups used to consist of five or more music geniuses working together for one goal: creating a great album or song. In today’s world, some of the most popular music artists are individual people such as Taylor Swift and Drake. While these artists are world-class musicians, they still don’t have the same teams and other artists performing with them.
Technology is the biggest reason for this new wave of single artists; it has allowed artists to make single songs in an efficient manner. There are a lot of troubles that come with having a band, and being able to produce music and publish it without the help of other people makes it much easier. While dealing with fewer complications can be a positive aspect, it has a negative effect that largely goes unnoticed.
When different people come together to form a band, not only are different talents brought out, but different personalities and opinions can also be reflected in the music. Songs like “Fortunate Son” by Creedence Clearwater Revival were written as ways to express personal beliefs in politics. While expressing beliefs in music still exists today, it is largely not as political with individuals.
Accepting that bands are a thing of the past, it still is worthwhile for people of all age ranges to listen, as it is basically a look into history. Setting aside the belief that classic music from the latter half of the 20th century is better than modern music, even if it weren’t better, listening can inspire people to be more passionate about issues and can even bring out different ways to express their beliefs.
Not only has technology taken over the music industry, a majority of the music that reaches the Billboard charts is composed of electronic music; there is a lack of guitar and piano, those elements are still a part of the song, but not as prominent. Parts where a single instrument is playing, like a guitar solo, are hard to find in modern music. The world would benefit from more diverse playing styles of mainstream music.
