The girls’ JV lacrosse team ended their season with a record of 5-3. They went into the highly anticipated Sherwood game with a record of 4-3. Their most notable win was when the girls surpassed all expectations by taking the lead in the second half of the Whitman game, beating their notoriously good team 7-5.

The girls immediately got back into the swing of things after spring break with a 16-4 win against Paint Branch on Apr. 20. They came out strong, starting with a goal by sophomore Hayley Cooper, followed by three goals by freshman Josie Spicer. Spicer had a total of five goals in the game as well as five goals for sophomore Lindsey Mcney.

Another three goals were scored by freshman Skylar Cohen and one goal each for sophomore Jenna Heitmann, freshman Jennifer Miranda and freshman Isa Davis-Astrada.

The team is confident going into the Sherwood game and so was Coach Lauren Zucconi. “The Sherwood game is always a close game, but I think the girls are ready,” Zucconi said.

The team is made up of girls whose main sport is mostly field hockey or soccer and many of them are new to lacrosse. With only a few games left in the season, their impressive record as new players shows how hard they have been working. “The girls have learned a lot and improved a lot, I think they have had a lot of fun so I would say the season is a success,”  Zucconi said.

When getting ready to play the great team from Sherwood on Friday April 22 at 5:30 p.m. and felt they were feeling up to the task. “I think we can win against them,” sophomore Irene Kim said before the game. “We just have to remember everything we have done throughout the season.”

They immediately took the lead against Sherwood, beating them in an exciting, fast paced game 9-4 with goals from Kim, Mcney, Cooper, Spicer, and freshman Paige Euler and amazing saves by their goalie, junior Naomi Dunbar.

The girls have created a close knit team who are all big supporters of each other. “I love being on lacrosse because it has given me the opportunity to be a part of a community while improving my skills,” Cooper said.

They post regularly on their Instagram story, updating their followers about games, team dinners, and other activities. Following their game against Sherwood, they posted how proud they were of the team and their accomplishments. Their last game was Apr. 26. where they beat Northwest 5-3. With the season now over, the coaches pulled up sophomore Bailey Lutts, junior Julia Lvovsky, and Dunbar to play with varsity. For more follow them @woottonjvglax.
