For the first time in more than five decades, the New York Knicks are NBA champions. The Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs in five games to claim the franchise’s first NBA championship since 1973, completing one of the most memorable playoff runs in recent history, finishing 16-3 in the postseason.

While analysts and fans predicted the young Spurs would emerge victorious, especially after their resounding victory over the defending OKC Thunder, New York’s resilience and experience proved to be the difference throughout the series.

The finals showcased two teams at different stages of development. San Antoniio entered the matchup as one of the league’s brightest young teams, led by MVP candidate Victor Wembanyama and a talented young core around him. However, the pressure of the NBA finals exposed one of the team’s biggest weaknesses: closing out matchups and mental toughness.

Several times during the series, the Spurs appeared to have control, only for the Knicks to storm back with dramatic fourth-quarter performances, the most impressive of which was a historic 29-point comeback in game four, finished off by an OG Anunoby tip-in at the buzzer. New York consistently capitalized on San Antonio’s late-game mistakes. Junior Emmanuel Liu described the Knicks’ determination as the defining factor of the series. “Every game they still believed they could win and stayed composed, and that’s what champions do,” Liu said.

For Knicks fans, the championship represents the end of a decades-long wait filled with disappointment and near misses. The franchise had not won an NBA title since 1973, making this victory one of the most significant moments in New York sports history. Junior Liam Dolan reflected on what the title means to the city. “A lot of people never thought they’d see the Knicks win a title. To finally be able to bring one back to New York is incredible,” Dolan said.

Despite the loss, San Antonio’’s future remains exceptionally bright. Reaching the NBA Finals with such a young roster is an accomplishment in itself, and the experience gained from competing on basketball’s biggest stage could be invaluable moving forward. Junior Xander Doherty believes the defeat will ultimately benefit the Spurs. “They’re young, and sometimes you have to go through bosses like this before you figure out how to win. I think they’ll come back even stronger” Doherty said.

Although the series ended in only five games, it provided countless iconic moments, highlighted by New York’s relentless comebacks and San Antonio’s emergence as a rising force in the league.

One team celebrated a long-awaited championship, while the other gained experience that could shape its future. The 2026 NBA Finals may be remembered as the year the Knicks ended a 53-year title drought, but also as the beginning of what could become the Spurs’ next great era.
