A season of momentum: Boys’ lacrosse reflects on season

The boys’ varsity lacrosse team concluded its season with a record of 8–6, finishing the regular season with strong performances and building momentum heading into the playoffs. Throughout the spring, the team showed improvement in multiple areas of play and developed strong chemistry that helped them compete against some of the better teams in the county.

Although the regular season included difficult losses and inconsistent stretches, the team continued to remain competitive and secured a playoff spot. Players viewed the season as a success overall because of the team’s resilience and ability to respond after challenging games. The team’s energy and confidence appeared to peak at the right time entering postseason play. “Even though we lost the last two to end the season, we still had high hopes and confidence heading into the playoffs” junior Caleb Cook said.

The team opened playoffs with a dominant 16–2 victory against Kennedy. From the start of the game, the team controlled possession, created fast offensive opportunities, and played aggressive defense that limited Kennedy’s scoring chances. Multiple players contributed offensively, while the defense maintained pressure throughout all four quarters. The large margin of victory reflected the confidence and preparation the team carried into the postseason.

Following the win against Kennedy, the team advanced to face Magruder in the second round of playoffs. Unlike the previous matchup, the game against Magruder was far more physical and competitive. However, the team continued to execute offensively and maintained composure late in the game, eventually securing an 8–5 victory. The win marked one of the team’s strongest performances of the season and sent them into the next round with growing confidence.

After the high hopes to go into the playoffs, the pair of wins only kept that going. “It was really incredible, the energy was super high and it was an all around great game for the team,” sophomore Reed Gottesman said.

Despite defeating Rockville in the first game of the season in a cinematic 7-6 fashion, the boys’ season came to an end in the following round against Rockville in a difficult 11-2 loss. After entering the game with momentum from two playoff wins, the team struggled to maintain offensive rhythm and defensive consistency. Players expressed frustration with multiple aspects of the game, including missed opportunities, overall execution and officiating throughout the matchup.

Players also said they felt disappointed with the coaching decisions made during the game and throughout parts of the season. While players appreciated the opportunity to compete together and recognized the positive moments from the year, some believed that changes in leadership could help the program improve moving forward. Despite the frustration surrounding the ending of the season, players still reflected positively on the relationships and experiences built throughout the spring. “Being coached by Coach Phillips, at first, I was questioning his ability but soon realized that he is capable,” senior Christos Pazartzis said.

The loss to Rockville marked the end of the season for the team’s seniors, many of whom had spent years playing together within the program. For underclassmen, the playoff run provided valuable experience that they hope to build on next season. Even with the disappointing ending, players remained proud of the effort the team showed throughout the year and the progress that was made after a challenging regular season.

The team’s playoff victories against Kennedy and Magruder demonstrated the potential the roster had when playing with confidence and energy. Although the final game did not end the way players had hoped, the season still included memorable moments, important wins and growth across the roster. As the team looks ahead to next season, players hope to continue improving the program while building off the success they experienced during this year’s playoff run.
