Fans enjoy intense finish to MLB playoffs
The World Series will take place at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas.
The coronavirus not only affected our everyday lives, but also the professional sports seasons. The MLB season began on July 23, lasting only 60 games compared to the usual 162.
The playoff rules were changed to accommodate for the short season. This year’s playoffs consisted of 16 teams, six more than previous years. Normally, only the top team in each division makes the playoff. However, this year, two teams from each division qualified.
During the season, 43 total games were postponed because of positive coronavirus cases. The Miami Marlins had over 20 positive cases, yet they still fought to make the playoffs. “I rooted for the Marlins in the playoffs because they were big underdogs and I love to see teams unexpectedly win,” junior Dason Miller said.

Although the home favorite, the Washington Nationals, didn’t make the playoffs this year, there are plenty of students who support other teams. “I’ve been a Yankees fan my whole life, and it was great to see them back in the playoffs,” junior Jackson Brunner said.
The New York Yankees lost to the Tampa Bay Rays in the second round of the playoffs. “It was really disappointing seeing my team lose. Next year will be different,” Brunner said.
There is controversy on whether or not the World Series champion team should count in the record books because of the unusual circumstances of the season. “In a normal season, I think the Nationals would make the playoffs because they are great at the end of the season, but they didn’t get the chance this year,” junior Jack Mehler said.
The Tampa Bay Rays knocked out the Houston Astros on Oct. 17, securing their spot in the World Series. The Astros were involved in a cheating scandal following last season. They were caught using video footage to get an advance over their opponents. “I was happy that the Astros lost because I don’t respect that they cheated,” Mehler said.
The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 4-3 to punch their ticket to the World Series.
Baseball is a game full of surprises. The Dodgers and Rays both have a chance at winning the world series title.
