The boys’ varsity baseball team wrapped up their season with a 10-10 record and a run in regional semifinals, where they fell to Magruder. Although the season ended earlier than the team had hoped, the players showed resilience throughout the season and proved themselves competitive despite losing key players from last season’s roster.
Entering the spring, expectations were uncertain because of the important players they had lost. However, the team quickly demonstrated that they could compete at a high level. With senior leadership from captains Blake Graham, Cyrus Kaz, Josh Reid and Alex Grainger along with the other seniors, combined with younger talent, the team played a competitive season.
Several players earned postseason recognition for their performances. Graham was named First Team All Division, which was well-deserved as he led the county in home runs with five this season and he broke this school’s all-time batting average record with a batting average of .586. Sophomore Jake Allen, Kaz and Reid each earned Second Team All Division.
One of the biggest highlights of the year came on April 27 during senior night against Clarksburg. The team celebrated 11 seniors before earning an exciting 7-5 victory. Senior Hunter Sullivan delivered a strong performance on the mound pitching 5.1 innings to secure the win, while senior Tanner Cornet came in to close out the game. The offense exploded in the fourth inning when Kaz went three for four and launched a two-run home run. Senior Andrew Lim also homered in the inning with a solo shot that energized the dugout and the crowd. This win made senior night extra memorable for the graduating seniors. “My favorite game was Clarksburg because I hit a homer and we won on senior night,” Lim said.
Another defining moment of the season came on April 18 against BCC. The team rallied from a six-run deficit to earn an impressive 7-6 comeback win. Cornet and sophomore Ashton Yang combined to shut down BCC on the mound and keep the game within reach. Kaz went two for three with three runs scored, while senior Maxwell Scherr delivered a clutch double in the bottom of the sixth inning. For players, the BCC comeback represented the heart and determination of the team. “This season, BCC was my favorite game, but overall the season went good, it could’ve been better. We made lots of errors that led to runs and always seemed to have one bad inning where we fell apart,” Sullivan said.
Senior Justin Arnold shared similar thoughts about the BCC game and the team’s overall perseverance. “My favorite game was the BCC game, coming back was an amazing thing to do. I think the season went well. People thought we would be worse than we were because we lost a couple players, but as Cyrus Kaz would always say, ‘Let’s shock the world’,” Arnold said.
