The varsity softball team is off to an impressive start this season, sitting at 5-1 record, ranked fifth in Moco and building momentum behind strong pitching, solid defense and consistent offensive production throughout the lineup.
Head coach Woody (Clifford) Smith has been encouraged by the team’s rapid development and overall energy this spring. He emphasized how quickly the players have grown in their understanding of the game and how well they are applying strategy in real situations. “The girls have been playing fantastically. Their knowledge of the game has gotten better every day. They are really picking up the strategy and knowledge to make them a great team,” Smith said.
One of the biggest strengths of the team so far has been its depth, with every player contributing in important ways. Pitching and defense have been key to early success, along with timely hitting spread throughout the lineup. “All of the girls are crucial to the success of the team. Each player has contributed this season. Our pitching and defense have led to our success so far. We have had some timely hitting throughout the lineup,” Smith said.
Several players have stood out statistically early in the season. Pitcher Megan Smith has started strong with a 2-0 record, a 1.82 ERA and 20 strikeouts. Shortstop Brynn Priolo has been a major offensive force, hitting .600 with two home runs and 10 RBIs. Overall, seven players are currently hitting over .300, showing the team’s offensive balance.
Despite losing key seniors from last year’s roster, the team has adjusted well thanks to strong contributions from underclassmen and returning players. Sophomores and juniors have stepped into larger roles, while seniors continue to provide steady leadership and consistency.
Several players have made meaningful contributions. Sophomores Annika Rytting, Cam Stokes, Justice Key and Laila Kreiser have all played important roles in the team’s early success. Junior Audrey Wang has also returned strongly after missing last season with a torn ACL, bringing energy and production to the plate that has boosted the entire lineup. “Audrey Wang returned from a torn ACL that forced her to miss all last season and has been a force at the plate and her energy picks up the whole team,” Smith said.
Senior leadership has also been a major factor, with captains Emily Liu and Caroline Min guiding the team through the season. To Min, one of the most important parts of the game is staying connected as a team and maintaining a positive mindset through both wins and challenges. “We focus on staying together as a team and keeping our energy up no matter what the situation is,” Min said.
One of the highlights of the season so far was the team’s win over Kennedy on March 20, followed by a team lunch to celebrate the victory. The team also earned an 8-4 win over Poolesville, along with other key games against Northwood, Magruder, Churchill, Rockville and Quince Orchard, shaping the rest of the season.
Looking ahead, the team is focused on finishing strong and building momentum heading into regionals. With strong leadership, balanced contributions and continued growth, the team is positioned for a competitive finish to the season, with their next game against Walter Johnson on April 15.
