With a 3- 1 record in the volleyball season, including a 3-0 win against Paint Branch, and a 3-0 loss against Quince Orchard, the coed volleyball team has shown steady improvement as players adjust to new roles and continue building chemistry on the court. With a large number of rookie players like freshman Felipe Machado and returning players like Jayden Nguyen, the team has focused on improving key areas while working toward long-term success.
The Patriots have started the season strong and have been working on specific parts of the game. “We are performing well so far this season, and we have been focusing on improving our blocking and transitioning during play,” Machado said.
Even with early success, the team has faced challenges. Communication has been one of the main issues as players continue to get used to playing together. The team is still working to improve that as the season continues. “Our biggest challenge has been communication,” Machado said.
The team has grown a lot, especially in chemistry. Players did not know each other well at first, but that has changed over time. “At the start of the season, I did not know most of the players very well, but as we practiced together, we built strong connections and developed a bond that has helped guide the team,” Nguyen said.
Nguyen said that growth has helped the team communicate better during games. “Our team chemistry has improved significantly throughout the season. At first, we were quiet and did not celebrate much, but now we consistently encourage each other during and between points,” Nguyen said.
The team has also had to adjust to new positions. With a large number of players new to volleyball, learning different roles has been a challenge. Nguyen said the team is improving with more practice. “Since many of our players are new to volleyball, adjusting to different positions, such as middle blocker, was challenging. However, with practice, we have continued to improve and better understand our roles,” Nguyen said.
Machado said the team plays with a lot of energy, which makes our school’s program different from others. Energy helps the team compete. “Our team plays with a loud and explosive style. “Our energy and intensity set us apart from previous teams,” Machado said.
Looking ahead, the team is focused on improving and winning games. Nguyen said the goal is to keep getting better and build toward the future. Communication will continue to be important. “Our main goal is to win as many games as possible while continuing to improve so that we can develop into a strong varsity-level team in the future. We need to continue building communication and confidence between points, as communication is essential for success in volleyball,” Nguyen said.
The team will try to build on its early success as the season continues. The team hopes to continue improving consistency and teamwork as they prepare for tougher competition later in the season. They aim to stay focused and keep improving every game. The boys’ next game is against Churchill on April 16.
