From 10th grade English to drama classes, English teacher Emily Davis has taught it all. She currently teaches both ninth grade English and AP Literature at this school. However, teacher is not the only role she occupies. She also works as the drama director at Richard Montgomery.
As a mom of three kids, she spends a lot of time driving them to their different activities. But, a lot of her free time is spent enjoying bike riding and reading books. “I like riding my bike. I also like to read but that is really boring to say as an English teacher,” Davis said.
Davis did not originally intend on being a teacher. She attended Tufts University to major in international relations and psychology with hopes of becoming a spy. In doing this, she learned that the field would require much more danger than she was open to.
She also worked as a writer for television news before landing on English teacher. “In
general, I didn’t plan on becoming a teacher, but I worked some summer jobs and really enjoyed the energy that kids bring. I found that to be exciting and fulfilling,” Davis said.
Davis grew up in Rockville and attended Richard Montgomery for high school. When she began looking for work, she learned that her high school English and drama teacher was retiring and she had the opportunity to take up that role.
Davis has also found joy in running the theater program at Richard Montgomery. She often steps into her second title shortly after teaching eighth period. “I love theater. I always have. My masters degree is in theater and directing. I would say that is always been what I’ve been most passionate,” Davis said.
Davis’ teaching style seems to be a positive way of learning for students. “I really like
how she engages with us during AP Literature and asks our opinions on texts instead of just leading the lesson with her interpretations. I found this to be very helpful for my and my peers needs as the lessons are tailored to us,” senior Nikolai Prykupenko said. “I have truly enjoyed being in Mrs. Davis’ class and am excited to continue learning from her this semester.”
Similarly, students have enjoyed her welcoming and likeable attitude towards them. “Just from having her as a teacher, I can tell that she’s a very charismatic and genuine person. I feel very comfortable in her class and feel like I can ask questions when I need to,” senior Joanna Jacob said.
Davis has found the English department to be a positive aspect of working as a teacher at this school. “I think that the English department is really strong. I work with a lot of really talented and smart teachers,” Davis said.
Additionally, Davis said she enjoys the students she teaches. “The students at Wootton are generally kind, hardworking, interesting, and interested people. I feel like students are interested and willing to learn and stretch themselves,” Davis said.
