After having a solid season, the golf team’s championship run has come to a disappointing end. The team finished in fifth place with a score of 329, 42 points behind the winner, Churchill.
They played at Rattlewood instead of Poolesville, the tougher of the two courses, and did not play up to their best. “The course was very hard and people didn’t shoot well,” coach James Long said.
With the season coming to an abrupt end, there is still good news. Sophomore Noah Siman finished in 18th place, with a score of 80, which is high enough to qualify for states. “I think I have been preparing well for the state tournament,” Siman said.
Sophomore Andrea Chen also had a fantastic season, finishing in third place in the girls’ division. After three matches this season, she shot an average of 38.67 strokes. She will look to lead the girls’ team to a more successful season next year.
Senior Joey Voyta had a successful year as well, finishing in third place in the boys’ division, shooting an average of 35.67 strokes per match through six matches. At Rattlewood, he shot a score of 82, which was not high enough to qualify for states.
The team did have a strong finish to the season, coming in first in their last match of the regular season on Sept. 27 against Whitman, Sherwood and WJ, with a score of 195. In the regular season, they finished in fourth place in the Yachmetz division, with a record of 10-8 and will look to improve next year. “We had a solid season this year but our goal was states and nothing short,” junior Zach Kerr said.
The team will be losing three key players next year. Seniors Joey Voyta, Darren Feldman and Simon Fischer will all be graduating and leaving the team. This loss of three of their top four players this year will be damaging for the success of the team next year. Even with three key seniors departing, Long remains optimistic. “For next season, I’m excited about the whole team and especially about juniors Kerr and Simon Bloch,” Long said.
Next year, the team will look to improve upon their mistakes, and practice hard to become better. “I don’t have any expectation for next year yet because I don’t know what our team will look like,” Kerr said.
Siman’s run for a state title will take place at the University of Maryland on Oct. 24, too late to be covered in this issue.
