Girls’ varsity softball season comes to end

After a losing record of 3-8 last season, the varsity girls softball team ended this season with a winning record of 9-8 The team is proud of their accomplishments and looks forward to next season. The future of girls’ softball looks bright, thanks to the seven underclassmen and two juniors who hope to lead the team to victory next season and beyond.

The last regular season games were against Einstein, Poolesville, Gaithersburg and Northwood. These games served as preparation for the team to go into their playoff game against Churchill for the Regional Quarterfinal.

The game against Einstein was a win of 7-6 Poolesville was a win of 7-4, Gaithersburg was a fantastic win of 19-5, and the end of the regular season was a close win of 1-0 against Northwood.

The regional playoff game against Churchill was a tough loss – the team traveled to Churchill to play and ended with a score of 12-1. Senior first baseman Kaitlin Mariani scored the lone point. The team was disappointed with how their season ended, but they are determined to come back and beat Churchill next season.

The softball team is losing five seniors: Mariani, Hope Safai, Niamh Colvin, Kassandra Acuna and Karen Potts. The team is sad to say goodbye to these significant players. “I am really sad because I’ve made amazing memories with them and I don’t want them to leave. I’m going to miss them so much but I know they’re going to do great things in the future,” freshman Megan Lomotan said.

The team has become connected through the season. They have had many moments throughout the season with ice cream runs and team dinners. “This season was really fun and was a great opportunity to meet new people,” freshman Eliana Cortez said.

Potts will continue her softball career at Case Western Reserve University, and the team is excited to watch her career. “I’m really sad to be leaving Wootton and all of the amazing teams I’ve been part of, but I can’t wait to see what they do in the future,” Potts said.

Safai is attending McDaniel College, Mariani is attending Elon University, Colvin is attending Penn State University and Acuna is attending Marymount University.
