Freshman Maya Bellamy scored both goals in a 2-1 victory over Whitman, including the game-winner in the final minutes of the match.

On Oct. 12, the JV girls’ soccer team capped off a fun-filled and successful season. The squad began the season with a 3-0 record but faltered later on, finishing with a 3-4-1 record.
The team started off their season with a dominant 6-0 victory over Rockville. Morale high, they moved on to play Northwest at home, where they won 2-0. Sophomore captain Kailey Waxman and freshman Izzy Caban both scored, and an excellent defensive performance helped secure the win.

One week later, the team played girls’ soccer powerhouse Whitman at home. Freshman Maya Bellamy scored twice, once off a cross by freshman Jordan Childs in the first half of the game, then again in the final few minutes of the game, off a beautiful cross by sophomore Lea Weinstein. After scoring that second goal, “I felt great, and I really felt like I was an important part of the team,” Bellamy said.

After that thrilling victory, the Patriots proceeded to lose four straight games. The first was a close 2-1 loss to WJ. The game was tied 1-1 for most of the game before the Wildcats broke through to get a goal in the final three minutes of regular time.

Two days after the WJ game, on Oct.1, the team played school rival Churchill on a rainy Saturday afternoon, losing 1-0. The team then lost 1-0 to B-CC in their final home game of the season before playing QO on Oct. 11 where they lost again, 2-0.

Aftera string of losses, the team was eager to get a win in their final game of the season against Richard Montgomery. The Patriots went down 1-0 in the first 10 minutes of the game before Weinstein scored a volley inside the box to tie the game 1-1, in the middle of the half. Both teams continued to work hard throughout the whole second half but neither could find the net, so the game went into overtime. After two five-minute periods of overtime, the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Overall, reflections on the season were positive. The team enjoyed practices, games, team dinners, bagel breakfasts, and spirit days throughout the season, which helped bring the girls closer together. “My favorite part of the season was bonding with my teammates. It was really fun and I made a lot of new friends,” sophomore Melissa Lee said.

While the girls had fun off the field, they also relished important on-field moments Players agree that one of the most memorable games of the season was the win against Whitman. “The Whitman game was fun because it was so close and we really had to pull together at the last minute to win,” freshman Peyton Higgins said.

After the close of the season, varsity girls’ soccer head coach Chris Thompson added seven JV girls to the varsity team, to give them a taste of what varsity soccer is like. The seven players include Bellamy, Caban, freshmen Isabella Trubiano and Gabriella Guidorizzi, and sophomores Isabella Davis-Astrada, Lea Weinstein and Samantha Shiveley.
