After the first three games the varsity girls’ lacrosse team sits at 1-2, after beating Richard Montgomery and falling to Walter Johnson and Holy Child.
So far lackluster defense has been the story, with the Patriots giving up at least 14 goals every game. While the offense has not been ineffective, it hasn’t been enough to propel the team to victory every game. Senior midfielder Raeann Carpenter is confident that the team can turn it around. “Even though we haven’t had the best start, I think we will be just fine, we have a good team,” Carpenter said.
Carpenter should be looked on to have a bigger role on the team this season. After a successful junior campaign, she is now tasked with the challenge of being the starting midfielder. Carpenter was able to earn this position due to her versatility on offense and defense. Carpenter is excited for the new challenge of being a starter this season. “While I know it won’t be easy, I am ready for this year,” Carpenter said.
On Mar. 21 the Patriots traveled to take on Holy Child. They lost 14-1. The team wasn’t able to put anything together, as Holy Child was able to outclass the Patriots in every phase of the game. Holy Child was able to convert on 14 of their 17 shots on goal. The Patriot offense wasn’t able to be successful because of the the clogged passing and shooting lanes created by the Holy Child defense. Senior defender Grace Henschel liked the team’s effort even in the loss. “We played hard and I’m proud of that,” Henschel said.
On Mar. 27 the Patriots took on Walter Johnson at home. They were unable to get anything going, losing the game 21-6. The defensive woes continued as the Patriots were unable to stop the potent Wildcat offense. The team took a determined attitude into the next game.
On Mar. 29 the team took on Richard Montgomery at home. They took care of business, winning 16-14. The offense was finally able to click, netting 16 of their 20 shots on goal. Even though the defense wasn’t up to par once again, the offense came up strong. This offensive momentum created confidence amongst the team.
