Dark, intriguing, even more mysterious: Season 2 of ‘A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder’

On May 27, the second season of “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” dropped on Netflix. Based on the trilogy by Holly Jackson, the show follows 18-year-old Pippa (Pip) Fitz-Amobi in the fictional town of Little Kilton in England.

In the first season, for her Extended Project Qualification, Pip investigates the five-year-old murder of a girl named Andie Bell, who was allegedly killed by Andie’s boyfriend, Salil (Sal) Singh, who then supposedly confessed to the murder in a text and killed himself. To everyone, the case is closed, but to Pip, it is far from over. Pip delves into this murder case with the intent of finding Sal innocent and, in the process, other hidden secrets emerge.

The second season is different from the first for several reasons. In season one, the characters are introduced and the beginning focuses on the relationships between Pip and her family and friends. The storyline stays on track, and even with the plot twists, we know that Andie’s murder will be solved. Season two is a bit different in that the plot takes more of a turn toward the end, throwing us into an unexpected twist. The production quality is also higher in the second season. There is more attention to detail and the music sets the moods when needed.

This second season focuses on Pip’s friend Conner and the disappearance of his brother, Jamie. When Conner finds out that his brother didn’t come home the night before, he reaches out to Pip for help. Pip is hesitant to start an investigation into this because she believes she will put her family and friends in danger, like she did while investigating the Andie Bell case.

Pip eventually agrees to look into Jamie’s disappearance. She works with Ravi, her boyfriend and Sal’s younger brother, Conner, and her best friend, Cara Ward. Pip uses photos and other pieces of evidence to try and figure out where Jamie could be.

Conner expresses Jamie’s odd and suspicious behavior and Pip soon finds out that Jamie was being catfished by a woman named Layla Mead on a dating app. This leads Pip to discover information and possible secrets about Jamie.
While the investigation into Jamie was happening, Max Hastings, a man Pip met in her investigation of Andie Bell, who was found to be involved in the sexual assaults of multiple girls, was standing trial on the charges brought against him. Pip is stressing about this because she knows what kind of person he is and wants justice for the girls he hurt.

As Pip continues to investigate, more secrets are brought to light, and she is even sent multiple threatening messages telling her to stop investigating. The show takes a dark turn toward the end, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats.

In the last episode of this season, we see Pip dealing with the aftermath of the traumatic events that occurred during this investigation. The outcome of the Max Hasting trial also caused Pip to make reckless decisions and push the people closest to her away.

Ravi continues to be a team player and supports Pip the best he can. Cara is finally getting used to her life the way it is, with everything that happened during the Andie Bell investigation.

Due to this show being based on a book, there are differences. There are certain parts from the book that were cut out, or certain things that were changed in the TV adaptation. Robin Hastings, Max’s cousin, was a new character in the show. Stanley Forbes was a journalist in both the first and the second book, but in the show, he wasn’t in the first season and he was a security guard instead of a journalist. “The show has to condense the book into one season with only a few episodes so there are minor details and plot points that don’t come up,” Jones College Prep junior Parvathi Limaye said.

People who have read and liked the books, said it can be exciting to see the story visually. “I have been planning to watch it because I’m curious on how they will show the mystery aspect applied to the movie from the book,” freshman Kelly Huang said.

Overall, this season of the show was a success. It spent its first two weeks in the top 10 of the Netflix Global Top TV list and has been praised by critics. The plot got darker and more intense, and for those who enjoyed the books, it was exciting to bring it to the big screen.
