Maryland has dozens if not hundreds of golf courses, ranging from beginner layouts to championship level, that challenge even the best players. With courses spread across the state, golfers have access to a variety of designs, landscapes and playing experiences. While rankings are always subjective, these 10 courses stand out.
10. Needwood Golf Course
Located in Derwood, Needwood Golf Course earns its place at ten, because of its accessibility and enjoyable layout. The course has an 18-hole course and a 9-hole course as well, rolling terrain, tree-lined fairways, and memorable holes that include the tee box being over 100 feet higher than the fairway. While it is not the most difficult, or prettiest course in Maryland, it provides a fun challenge for golfers of all skill levels and remains a favorite among students. Junior Evan Batbold said he “just got into golf and Needwood has been a good starting course.”
9. Crossvines
Crossvines, located in Poolesville, has quickly gained attention as one of the state’s premier public golf facilities. Following renovations, the course now offers excellent conditions, strategic bunkering, and a modern design that rewards smart play but the course is also very open and forgiving for golfers who slice the ball. Its combination of quality and affordability makes it a rising star in Maryland golf. The only downside is the location because it is a 30 minute drive from the area.
8. P.B. Dye Golf Club
Designed by architect Pete Dye’s son, P.B. Dye, located just shy of Frederick, is known for its dramatic elevation changes and challenging layout. The course features numerous risk-reward opportunities and stunning views throughout the property, as it is built around farmland and hills. Golfers looking for a test of both skill and strategy often find P.B. Dye to be one of Maryland’s toughest rounds.
7. Lakewood Country Club
Lakewood, in Rockville, earns a spot on this list because of its strong conditions and enjoyable design. The course combines well-maintained greens with a layout that rewards accuracy without being overly punishing. Its welcoming atmosphere and reliable playing experience have made it a popular destination for local golfers. My favorite part of the course is the well placed benches from hole-to-hole that are well needed for breaks and relaxing mid-round.
6. Blue Mash Golf Course
Blue Mash, located in Olney, has become one of the most recognizable public courses in the state. The course features wide fairways, large greens, and a links-inspired design that offers a unique challenge. Similar to spots one and eight, Blue Mash is a very hilly course that calls for great views around sunset. Excellent conditioning and a variety of holes keep golfers intrigued.
5. Northwest Golf Course
Northwest, in Silver Spring, is one of Montgomery County’s hidden gems. The course stretches over 7,300 yards of hills and offers one of the most demanding public layouts in the area. Synonymous to Needwood, Northwest also has both 9 and 18 hole courses. Its combination of length, elevation changes, and well-protected greens creates a challenging but rewarding experience for golfers. This was my most recent round and the course was in great shape and very green.
4. Whiskey Creek Golf Club
Whiskey Creek, located in Ijamsville, is considered one of Maryland’s most scenic golf courses. While I think there are other scenic courses, Whiskey Creek is nestled near the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, the course features beautiful views, immaculate conditioning, and a layout that requires precision and good golf. Every hole feels distinct, helping Whiskey Creek stand out among the state’s elite courses. Sophomore Jack Sisco loved Whiskey because of the 18th hole. “On 18, there is an old brick shed-like building right in the middle of the fairway to miss on your drive, then the approach is over water, which really brings together the round,” Sisco said.
3. Musket Ridge Golf Club
Musket Ridge, in Myersville, is famous for its mountain views and dramatic elevation changes. The course rewards aggressive play while still demanding accuracy from tee to green. Its signature holes and stunning setting make it one of the most memorable golfing experiences in Maryland. On June 6, junior Henry Jacobs played 18 holes there and said the course was in impeccable shape. “The holes at Musket Ridge are unlike any other course,” Jacobs said.
2. Woodmont Country Club
Woodmont, in Rockville, consistently ranks among the top courses in the region due to its championship-level design and outstanding course conditions. The layout challenges golfers with strategically placed hazards and fast greens while providing a fair test of skill. Its reputation and quality make it one of Maryland’s premier golfing destinations. The US open qualifier was here.

Taking the top spot is Maryland National Golf Club in Middletown. The course combines spectacular mountain views, exceptional conditioning, and a challenging yet enjoyable layout. Designed to take full advantage of the natural terrain, Maryland National offers a memorable experience from the first tee to the final green. Its combination of scenery, course quality, and playability makes it the best public golf course in Maryland.
While every golfer may have a different ranking, these courses represent some of the finest golf Maryland has to offer. Whether players are searching for difficulty, stunning scenery, or simply a fun weekend round, these courses provide outstanding experiences across the state. This list does face bias, as I have not played all courses in Maryland.
