Spring, summer fashion trends: How style is evolving with color, design, self-expression

Fashion trends are constantly evolving, with certain styles quickly rising in popularity while others fade over time. This can make students wonder if the trends coming out are truly long-lasting or are just temporary. “Fashion trends that will likely disappear quickly are low-effort, overly slouchy looks because trends are starting to shift toward encouraging creativity and 'chic but comfy' clothing with vibrant colors,” freshman Avery Johnson said.

From neutral-toned linen sets to bold, bright tropical prints, spring and summer fashion is blending comfort with sustainability as freshmen embrace affordability and personality both in and out of the classroom.

Once considered a niche trend, circular fashion is becoming a major strategic and economic driver influence for brands in 2026. Consumers are increasingly focused on sustainability and the impact of the clothing they wear. Luxury brands such as Gucci are offering resale partnerships and using recycled fabrics and materials in their collections. According to IFA Paris, textile design is entering a new era through innovations such as plant-based leathers (including Mycelium), fabrics made from apple skin, algae, and recyclable yarns without harmful chemicals. In addition, fashion trends such as oversized sets, recycled denim and neutral colors are becoming popular because they are viewed as timeless and sustainable.

Students find comfy clothing, such as sweatpants or oversized hoodies, stylish because they combine comfort, confidence and current fashion trends. These relaxed outfits allow students to feel comfortable throughout a long school day. “Some fashion trends I consider underrated this year are the Hollister sweatpants because they are so soft and affordable, and I feel like they work well for both lounging and everyday outfits. I also enjoy wearing Uggs because they make me feel like I’m walking on clouds and I consider them wearable for everyday life in 2026 because you can match them with almost anything like baggy jeans or sweat sets,” freshman Naomi Williams said.

The United States sustainable fashion market is projected to reach $2.5 billion to $3.2 billion by the end of 2026. This growth is driven by growing consumer demand (particularly from Gen Z and Millennials), increasingly stringent regulatory frameworks, and the rapid expansion of circular economy models including the resale market, which is expected to reach $66-68 billion in 2026, according to sourceready.com. Consumers are driven by a desire for unique styles, eco-friendly fashion and affordability.

As fashion trends begin to fade, students are searching for new and unique styles that better reflect their individuality. Bright colors such as orange and blush pink, students continue to incorporate bold shades into their outfits to create eye-catching outfits. “I think one of the most outdated fashion trends is skinny jeans because people are looking for looser styles, such as baggy or wide-legged denim, rather than tight-fitted jeans. Also, fashion trends that will likely disappear quickly are low-effort, overly slouchy looks because trends are starting to shift toward encouraging creativity and ‘chic but comfy’ clothing with vibrant colors,” freshman Avery Johnson said.

Freshman Miriam Ackley said she prefers wearing high-quality clothing pieces because they can boost confidence and allow for self-expression, through colors or textures. “One thing I think we should normalize is dressing more extravagantly and uniquely because it can remind people that personal style matters. Also, wearing outfits that feel both stylish and comfortable allows people to feel confident in themselves without being influenced by others’ opinions or the desire to fit in,” Ackley said.
