Reflecting on the conclusion of high school

High school is often described as four short years, but for students like myself, it becomes a time in your life that shapes nearly every part of who they are. From the constant stress of academics, to the amazing athletics, to the life lasting friendships you gain, and the annoying personal struggles, high school leaves lasting lessons that continue long after graduation. When looking back on my own experience, I realize that high school has shaped me into the person I am today by teaching me about responsibility, resilience, confidence and the importance of relationships.

I remember when I first entered high school, I was unsure of myself and nervous about being in a new building, with new people and experiencing new things. Everything felt unfamiliar. At the time, high school seemed intimidating, but those experiences pushed me to adapt quickly. Over the years, I learned how to manage my time, balance responsibilities and become more independent. The transition from being guided through every step to taking responsibility for my own success helped me mature both academically and personally.

Academics played one of the biggest roles in shaping my high school experience. Each class challenged me in different ways and taught me valuable skills that extended beyond textbooks and assignments. Although there were moments when stress and deadlines felt overwhelming, those challenges taught me perseverance and discipline. High school has shown me that growth often comes from pushing through difficult situations rather than avoiding them.

Outside of academics, the girls’ soccer team was maybe the most impactful activity that has happened to me at school. I was so fortunate to be involved in such a fun, kind, and amazing team that shaped me and pushed me through high school. Being on the team gave me a reason to look forward to fall season. Starting all the way from freshman year making the varsity team, it made adjusting into high school even easier since I had upperclassmen to guide me and be my first friends. My self confidence was able to grow within being on a high school sport team and it gave me a place to be relaxed and disconnected from the stressful workloads and personal struggles.

My teammates, classmates, teachers and friends all contributed to my growth by encouraging me during difficult moments and celebrating accomplishments with me. Perhaps the most meaningful part of high school has been the relationships I formed along the way. The friendships created during these years have become some of the strongest since some of my peers I’ve known since elementary school. Being able to experience so many moments together, from stressful tests to school dances, and even sporting events, created memories that will stay with me long after high school ends. My friends also had a huge impact on my high school experience as I was able to have fun and enjoy being at school, all because of them. We are all going from sitting together at lunch and driving to each other’s houses every day, to having to wait till winter, spring and summer break to see each other and talk about all our different lives.

My teachers were so influential in my amazing high school experience. All my teachers throughout all four years were so good that I felt I could speak to every single one out of class or even during, comfortably. They showed me patience, respect and even passion. The passion to take care of their students and teach them lifelong skills and knowledge. I felt like some of my teachers were honestly my friends at times. Mrs. Starr, you are a teacher whom I adore so much because of all you’ve done for me throughout my whole common sense journey. You are a teacher I can always look to for help, advice, or just to chat with. The positive comments you leave on my journals and articles truly have always made my day and made me feel so much better about my work. It’s a small but impactful thing, and I thank you. I have always felt nothing but joy being in your class these past years, and I’m so grateful I was able to experience it.

Although high school may only last four years, its impact lasts much longer. The memories, lessons and relationships I formed during this time have become a part of my identity. For me, high school has been a journey of ups and downs, but in the end, I was able to shape myself into a more responsible, respectable, resilient young woman, and I thank my friends, teammates, coaches, and teachers for that. Hugs!
