Walking into high school as a freshman, I had no idea how quickly four years would pass. At the time, high school felt intimidating and overwhelming. I was stepping into a new environment filled with unfamiliar faces, harder classes and higher expectations. Looking back now as a senior, I realize that my time at Wootton was about much more than academics. It was a period of growth, friendships, challenges and memories that shaped who I am today.
One of the biggest lessons I learned during high school was the importance of balance. Between classes, sports, homework and preparing for the future, there were moments when life felt stressful. Playing baseball taught me discipline, teamwork and how to stay committed even when things became difficult. There were long practices, exhausting games and moments of failure, but those experiences helped me grow stronger mentally and physically. Wrestling and other activities also pushed me outside my comfort zone and taught me resilience. Through sports, I learned that success does not come instantly. It comes from consistency, effort and learning from mistakes.
Academically, Wootton challenged me to think differently and work harder than ever before. Some classes came naturally to me, while others required extra time and persistence. I learned how to manage deadlines, study effectively and advocate for myself when I needed help. More importantly, I learned that grades alone do not define a person. The experiences, work ethic and relationships developed along the way matter just as much. Teachers at Wootton pushed students to succeed, but they also cared about us as people, and that support made a lasting impact on me.
Beyond academics and sports, the friendships I made are what I will remember most. High school gave me the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds and build connections that I hope will last long after graduation. Some friendships started in classrooms, others on the baseball field, and some through random everyday moments that turned into lasting memories. Whether it was laughing during lunch, celebrating wins together or helping each other through stressful times, those moments made high school meaningful.
Of course, not every moment was perfect. There were setbacks, disappointments and times when I doubted myself. However, those experiences taught me some of the most valuable lessons. I learned how to adapt, stay motivated and keep moving forward even when things did not go as planned. High school showed me that failure is not the end; it is part of growth.
As I prepare to graduate and attend the University of South Carolina, I know I am leaving Wootton with more confidence and maturity than when I first arrived. Wootton High School gave me memories, friendships and lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. While I am excited for the future, part of me will always miss the experiences and people that made these four years unforgettable.
