Students will soon have a new sweet destination just minutes from school. Carmen’s Ice Shop is preparing to open its doors in the Cabin John Shopping Center this summer, bringing a fresh option for ice cream and after school trips with friends.
The arrival of Carmen’s has sparked excitement among students; they see the shop as a convenient new spot given its proximity. The shop is expected to become a popular addition to the local area. Students are already looking forward to the convenience of the new location. “I’m excited that there will be a Carmen’s closer and more convenient to get to,” freshman Leila Krauthamer said.
Carmen’s Italian Ice began at 1115 Nelson Street in Rockville and has gradually grown throughout Montgomery County, adding locations in Olney, Kensington, and the Kentlands neighborhood of Gaithersburg. The company was established in 2001 by Jason Mandler, whose goal was to introduce the classic Italian ice tradition from South Jersey and Philadelphia to the Washington, D.C., area. “When it opens, Carmen’s is expected to offer six to eight flavors of frozen custard alongside approximately 18 to 20 varieties of Italian ice, as well as gelati, shakes, and other frozen treats,” according to The MoCo Show.
Students are hoping the shop opens before summer, as “Earlier this year, the company indicated it was targeting a late spring or early summer opening for the Cabin John Village location, though that timeline has not been officially confirmed,” according to the MoCo Show.
The proximity of Carmen’s new shop is expected to make the shop a regular stop for students. “I think I will visit Carmen’s new place weekly during the summer,” Krauthamer said.
Students want to see broader benefits for the school community. The opening of Carmen’s creates new possibilities for class events, sports team celebrations and school fundraisers. “Ssince it gives an opportunity for kids to enjoy a treat, and it could be good for fundraising and catering,” sophomore Siwon Lee said.
The difference between Carmen’s and other ice cream shops is the variety. “Compared to other ice cream shops, this has soft serve, so it brings variety. I’m looking forward to their shaved ice and their soft serve ice cream,” freshman Joseph Davis said.
According to The Store Reporter, “The new shop will be open year-round, with its own seating plus easy access to the mini-mall’s central common area and outdoor spaces. Mandler is shooting for a summer opening across from Colony Grill, in the long-ago home of Momo Taro Sushi Express.”
As the opening of Carmen’s Ice Shop approaches, excitement continues to build among students. From convenient after-school Friday visits to new possibilities for fundraising and team events, the shop is already viewed as a positive addition to the community. Students are eager to see whether Carmen’s will live up to the high expectations and become a favorite local destination for the people closer to Cabin John.
