Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters this summer on July 31 as the Tom Holland Spider-Man saga continues.
Brand New Day is the fourth iteration of the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies, with the three previous being Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home. Holland is the first Spider-Man to have a fourth movie, as Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man had three films and Andrew Garfield’s had two films. Holland is also the first Spider-Man to be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU, as the previous two Spider-Men were in their own universes separate from Marvel characters such as Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye and more.
The last Holland film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, featured all three Spider-Men as Maguire and Garfield made appearances in Holland’s Spider-Verse, creating one of the biggest superhero moments ever. With the multiverse now established, Brand New Day is expected to shift focus back to Peter Parker’s personal life after the entire world forgot his identity. This restart opens the door for Brand New Day to explore possibilities never before seen in a Spider-Man movie. “There’s tons they could do with Spider-Man, who lost his memories; they could add new villains or go into his relationships,” senior Jonas Klein said.
Fans are already speculating about which villains could appear in the new movie. Classic enemies like Scorpion and Kingpin have been teased by Marvel and could be featured in the movie. There is also a buzz surrounding Ned Leeds (Peter’s best friend), potentially becoming the Hobgoblin, a storyline inspired by the comics. Ned’s memory loss from No Way Home is the perfect setup for his transition to villainhood and becoming the famous Hobgoblin. “I think Peter is going to catch Ned and MJ together, which will make Peter mad and turn Ned into a villain,” senior Yeshetila Tafa said.
Famous actress Zendaya is also expected to return as MJ, though her role may be different. With no memory of Spider-Man or Peter, their relationship will likely start from scratch, creating tension and uncertainty. Marvel has already teased this relationship at the end of No Way Home when Peter steps into a coffee shop post memory wipe and experiences an awkward encounter with MJ, even though throughout the story they were seen as lovebirds. The fans are eager to see how their chemistry evolves under the post-memory wipe saga. “Since Peter Parker erased the memories of everyone who previously knew him, this movie will bring a fresh reset to the Spider-Man series,” sophomore Ashton Yang said.
The film is also set to explore Peter’s independence more deeply than ever before. Without mentors like Tony Stark, Bruce Banner and the Avengers, he must navigate this journey on his own. This shift could bring a more mature tone, focusing on responsibility, isolation and growth as Peter balances independence, college life and fighting crime. There could also be some bonus cameos from famous Marvel characters like the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, as Disney recently acquired the rights from FOX to those characters.
While Marvel has kept details secret, expectations are high for an amazing and powerful story. Whether introducing new villains or reimagining familiar faces, Brand New Day has the potential to redefine Holland’s version of Spider-Man. As anticipation builds, fans are ready to swing back into movie theaters for what could be the most close-to-home and personal Spider-Man story yet.
