Flowers blooming, rain falling and warmer weather are all signs of spring approaching. With this pretty season comes exciting festivals and activities that students can partake in. From biking to picking flowers, the options for being outside during spring are endless.
One activity that interests people is being active. Students might like to go biking around their neighborhood, play sports or take a hike. Being active in spring can be helpful to people both mentally and physically. “My favorite spring activity is just doing karate,” freshman Niemah Reed said.
Even if students prefer not to play a sport or exert too much energy, there are other ways students can relax and take in the spring weather. Reading books outside, taking a calming walk with a pet or having a picnic with friends can all be nice activities to participate in.
Spring is also a good time to enjoy the beautiful weather with friends. Making plans and getting together to try a new activity or even just walk around a neighborhood is a fun way to enjoy the season and spend time with friends. “I like to play some basketball and hang out with friends,” freshman Kevin Roth said.
Students may like to spend more time indoors and there are activities that can take place in the comfort of one’s own home. Spring crafts like flower pressing, painting, or jewelry making are calming ways to celebrate the season. “I like to build birdhouses…and paint them,” Reed said.
Spring also opens up new sports to play such as softball, lacrosse and baseball. These sports are a great way to get exercise and to engage with friends. Chloe DiPaola said that she likes to play softball during spring. “I find it fun and engaging,” DiPaola said.
There are students who prefer to take in the cool air and be outside, even if it means they’re not doing a certain activity. This can be a good way to appreciate the weather as well as clear one’s mind. Sophomore Dylan Rodriguez said that he likes to go outside. “It’s nice outside. It’s not too cold,” Rodriguez said.
Certain spring activities students don’t seem to like as much. A number of people suffer from allergies during the spring and there are other factors that can make spring less appealing. “My least favorite [activity] is gardening because I’m allergic to pollen and gardening… [it] makes my allergies really bad,” DiPaola said.
Spring festivals are coming up in the DMV area. The famous National Cherry Blossom Festival will take place from March 20 to April 12 in Washington, D.C. The Lincoln Strawberry Festival is taking place on May 17-19 in Loudoun County, VA. The Towsontown Spring Festival located in Towson will be taking place on May 2 and May 3.
Whether you’re a person who enjoys being outside and connecting with nature or prefers the comfort of being inside, there are always new spring activities to try out and to welcome the start of the season with.
