The SGA hosted their annual schoolwide lip sync battle on Dec.18 in the auditorium. Putin’ on the Hitz has been a tradition of the school for decades and is one of the highlights of the year for students. POTH brings together clubs, the national honors society, sports teams and all four classes for a night of performances and competition. These different performances rely on each group to choreograph a dance while lip syncing to different music, making the event a fun night for both performers and observers in the audience.
For some of the performers, dancing at the event was a step out of their comfort zone, making the event even more special, although challenging. “It was a little difficult learning all the dances, especially since I’m not a great dancer, but I pulled through,” senior Josh Derrell said.
SGA encouraged attendance through social media and hanging posters around the school. Tickets were sold before the event and at the door for $5 for students, or $3s if you were participating in the show. For adults, tickets were $10.
The event was split into two different acts, with act one consisting of clubs such as Afroelites, Bollywood and K-pop, while also having the National Honors Society and SGA perform. This act finished off with two sports teams, field hockey and girls’ basketball. Afroelites the best in the judges’ eyes, which won them the best club performance. “Winning was exhilarating. There were some good routines so I think we were all a little unsure, but that made the win more exciting,” Derrell said.
The theme for this year’s event was emotions and all four classes’ performances centered around a different emotion. This would allow each grade to produce a performance unique from previous years while also embodying the central theme of emotions. The freshman performance was anger, going head to head with the sophomores’ joy performance, juniors’ love-themed dance and seniors’ nostalgic number.
After act one, there was a brief intermission where the audience were able to purchase snacks outside of the auditorium. The second act consisted of the freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors, along with poms also performing at the end of this act. Out of the four classes, the class of 2027 with the theme of love, ended up winning the best performance. “The process felt really fun and I had a great time and winning felt really good especially since it was the third time winning in three years,” junior Dylan Parry said.
At the end of both acts, a QR code was displayed on the screen for the audience to vote on who they thought was the best act overall throughout the night through their mobile devices. After the results were in, the senior classes’ performance was announced as the fan favorite for the night. “I voted for the seniors as the best performance because I felt like they had performed with so many songs from my childhood and ended up using the emotion of nostalgia very well,” senior Rahul Basam said.
