“Tron: Ares,” the third movie of the Tron franchise, directed by Joachim Rønning, was released in theaters on Oct. 10. The franchise has had two previous movies named “Tron” and “Tron: Legacy” with “Tron” being released in 1982 and the sequel “Tron: Legacy” being released in 2010. Production for the third movie was delayed due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes, which pushed filming for the movie into early 2024. Due to the strikes, fans had only teasers and trailers to watch in anticipation for the third movie.
When the movie did come out, the production team unfortunately ended up seeing underwhelming box office numbers as the team saw a total of about $141 million made in about a month of the movie being out worldwide according to box office, with the US box office contributing about $72 million and international box offices contributing about $68 million. This resulted in about a $132.7 million loss when accounting for the films high net production cost of $220 million.
The storyline of the movie follows the powerful program Ares, who is sent from the digital grid into the real world on a critical mission, which marks humanity’s first major encounter with artificial intelligence on a physical level. The cast was led by Jared Leto, who was given the role of playing the program of Ares, along with actors Kevin Flynn, Greta Lee and Evan Peters playing supporting roles.
The movie is visually one of the best movies that I have watched, with neon-lit cities, light cycle races and great aesthetics throughout the entire movie. In addition to the beautiful aesthetics, the storyline of the movie is entertaining but had a few weaker scenes, which makes the movie a little boring at times.
When comparing this movie to the two Tron movies previously made, this movie seems to have the best graphics and action, which make it fast paced at times, but the movie does have a weaker story compared to the other two movies. Along with the weaker story, the movie has characters who do not fulfill too large of a role and could be forgotten about, which ends up leading to poor character development throughout the movie.
Overall, the movie does not have any factors that make it outstanding when comparing it to other action and sci-fi movies, but the movie is definitely not among one of the worst movies. I recommend the movie to somebody who may be interested in a movie that has breath-taking graphics, along with anyone who enjoys sci-fi and wants a new movie to watch. Additionally, I recommend it to any watcher who enjoyed watching the first two Tron movies as they may still enjoy the movie and see where the franchise as a whole has come. I rate it a solid seven out of 10 mainly due to the amazing visuals and cool action scenes, which make the movie worth watching at least one time.
