School uniforms can provide a sense of discipline and also prepare students for a professional environment in the future.

Uniforms in school continue to spike controversy over whether or not they benefit students, however, it is clear that uniforms lead to a safer school environment.

Uniforms allow schools to identify all students since everyone is wearing the same thing. According to Royal Public Schools, “Uniforms can act as a deterrent to intruders. In emergencies, such as a school lockdown, quick identification of students can be crucial for the authorities.”

Not only do school uniforms create a safer environment, there is also a reduction in bullying and social pressure. “By removing the emphasis on designer labels or trends, school uniforms can contribute to a friendlier and less judgemental school environment,” according to Royal Public Schools.

Discipline is another reason supporting the benefits of school uniforms. According to Royal Public Schools, “Wearing a uniform can instill a sense of discipline, as students must follow the daily routine of getting dressed for school, free from the decision-making process about their attire.”

Being required to adhere to a specific routine attire is also a good way to prepare students for professional environments in the future where a specific dress code is standard. “It forms the foundation for a strong work ethic, which schools aim to instill in their students from a young age,” according to Royal Public Schools.

Discipline among students leads to an enhanced focus on learning. By having everyone dress the same way without having any distractions to any other types of clothing, students are more focused on their studies. According to the Royal Public Schools, “The absence of fashion-based competition can lead to an increase in participation, interactions, and an overall more conductive learning environment.”

Implementing school uniforms could be helpful for students, however, it could also result in negative effects. The way a student dresses reflects on how they express themselves, making fashion an important part of their school experience. According to the Ohio State News, “When students can’t show their individuality, they may not feel like they belong as much.”

Wearing a school uniform could be uncomfortable for students, and “policy does not routinely consider gender diverse students,” according to the National Institute of Health (NIH).

Schools around the world require different kinds of uniforms. Although students may think that their uniform is comfortable and easy to move in, there could also be students who think the exact opposite. Uniforms may be restrictive and uncomfortable.

Another concern is that uniforms may not be affordable. For families who may struggle financially, and who want their child to receive a quality education, worrying about school uniforms is detrimental. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), “The cost of a uniform may be prohibitive, creating a barrier to education before the students even arrive on school grounds.”

School uniforms could be a way to create an equitable environment for students, however this idea has continued to spike controversy. Uniforms should not be implemented at every school because students should be able to express themselves. However, implementing uniforms at schools where students may prefer wearing a uniform is the right compromise.
