From Friends to the Odd Couple and an abundance of hit shows in between, Matthew Perry became a familiar and popular face seen on television across the country. His roles in shows throughout the years made him a popular and recognizable actor with a large fan base. On Oct. 28, 2023, Matthew Perry died from an apparent drowning, according to CNN, which has brought great sadness to his fans across the globe.

Born Aug. 19, 1969, in Williamstown, Massachusetts, Perry began a remarkable life that spanned 54 years and was full of huge roles in hit TV shows. His big break came in 1994 when the hit sitcom Friends began. Friends, which lasted 10 years, starred Perry alongside well-known actors Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer in the funny and unique plot of six friends who go about every life experience with each other. This show, which generated widespread popularity worldwide, put Matthew Perry into the limelight with a number of Emmy nominations throughout his career.

Senior Evan Geisner, a fan of Friends and follower of Matthew Perry’s career, was shocked and saddened by the news of his sudden passing. Geisner said, “Matthew Perry was a great actor who acted in many shows that I watched. In Friends, he became a well-known actor to me and I enjoyed watching and following his career. It is very disappointing he passed at such a young age but it was awesome watching him over the years in many of my favorite shows,” Geisner said.

In 1996, Matthew Perry received the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series for his role in Friends. This award, among other nominations and recognitions throughout his career, enhanced his reputation as one of the great actors of the past 35 years.

Senior Bilal Somji, who enjoyed shows Matthew Perry was in and was a fan throughout his career, was disappointed when hearing the news of his passing. Somji said, “It is really tragic to have a great actor dying at such a young age and I wish the best for his family. I thought he was a great actor who played many exciting roles that made the shows he starred in very good. The young age he passed at only adds to the sadness and disappointment many feel about his passing.”

Perry’s career, which began in 1979 with a childhood role in 240-Robert and, spanned over four decades with him starring or appearing in over 20 TV shows and movies. His career, which generated a substantial fan base both nationally and internationally, has made the news of his death a shocking and saddening ordeal.

Despite his death, the characters that he played will live on in the hearts and minds of fans for years to come as his shows and movies will continue to be seen and enjoyed by his fans all around the world.
