Adam Sandler’s “Hubie Halloween” releases on Netflix
Hubie Halloween is a fantasy/mystery movie starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Julie Bowen, with Shaquille O’Neal. It was released on Oct. 7 exclusively available on Netflix for the Halloween season. This movie is definitely worth the watch.
The movie is about Hubie Dubois (Adam Sandler), a middle-aged man who tries to keep his small town of Salem, Massachusetts, safe and friendly. He is in love with his neighbor Violet Valentine (Julie Bowen) but he is considered pathetic by most of the town as he lives with his mom (June Squibb). He frequently complains to the local policemen (Keenan Thompson and Kevin James) with claims that they don’t take seriously, like the supermarket selling expired bacon.
Hubie tells the policeman that there have been a string of kidnappings but they don’t believe him. They write this off as another thing that Hubie is complaining about that isn’t real and doesn’t affect anyone. This makes Hubie the only hope to save the town from the kidnappers.
Hubie Halloween has a combination of components from past Adam Sandler movies. For example, in The Waterboy Sandler plays Bobby Boucher, who is a social misfit who gets picked on by others and has a close relationship with his mom. Hubie also is a social misfit whose only friend is his mom. In the movie Happy Gilmore he has a crush on Julie Bowen and Julie Bowen doesn’t like him to start out, which also occurs in Hubie Halloween. Lastly, there are similarities to Uncut Gems as both films with NBA players making cameos (Kevin Garnett in Uncut Gems and Shaquille O’Neal in Hubie Halloween.)
Viewers enjoyed the film. Sophomore Ryan Kunst said, “I’m not the biggest fan of Adam Sandler but, I really like fall and Halloween so when I heard there was a Halloween movie I was very excited because those don’t come around often and I really liked this movie. I felt the supporting cast was very good and it was one of the first Adam Sandler movies where not only he was making me laugh.”
Freshman Isaiah Kuiper agreed. “I always loved watching Adam Sandler movies with my friends. Some of my favorites are The Do-over, Happy Gilmore, and The Waterboy. So once I heard that he was coming out with a new movie I had to watch it right away. I have to say it wasn’t his best but it still is definitely worth watching,” Kuiper said.
Hubie Halloween has the funny comedy like any Adam Sandler movie has, and the mystery to keep you on your toes. Hubie Halloween might not be the best Adam Sandler movie but it is still a fun and enjoyable movie that anyone can watch no matter the age.
