The Patriots had an impressive season with an overall 14-4 record, a district championship and a fourth place finish at states. Senior Noah Siman, senior Andrew Peng, sophomore Ryan Feldman and freshman Ethan Chelf represented at states. Their scores put together weren’t enough to bring home a championships, but were able to beat out some strong teams like Churchill.

The state championship took place at the University of Maryland on Oct. 22 and Oct. 24. On the first day Chelf shot a 75, four over par, Feldman shot a 82, 11 over par, Peng shot a 81, 10 over par, Siman shot a 87, 16 over par. The Patriots combined scores landed them in sixth place after the first day. Chelf said, “Even though were weren’t in the place we wanted to be, I was proud of my team and we were excited to bring in the next day.”
The second day of states Chelf shot a 78, seven over par, Feldman shot a 80, eight over par, Peng shot a 87, 16 over par, and Siman shot a 78, seven over par. After counting up the scores from both days the Patriots placed fourth. Urbana came away with the lowest combined score and took home the state championship. Feldman said, “We didn’t finish off the season how we wanted to, but we had a good season overall and I’m excited to come out and make another run next year.”
The Patriots finished ahead of both Churchill and Whitman who were some of the county’s best teams. Peng said, “We played well the whole year and came up just short, but I know the team will make the necessary fixes and have another good season next year.”
Both Siman and Peng finished their last golf season for the Patriots as they are graduating, but young talent including Feldman and Chelf leave optimism for another successful year for the golf team.
Golf coach Lesley Stroot said, “The season in general didn’t end up how we hoped, but we still came in fourth in the state, which is pretty impressive. The kids were a little disappointed, but I am still proud of how they did.”
This was Stroot’s first year coaching the golf team and boys in general. It was a big learning experience for her and the support of all of the boys assisted her in their successful season. She was able to lead the team to a district win and a state championship appearance in her first year, thanks to her coaching ability and camaraderie from all of the teammates.
