It takes mental toughness to overcome a disappointing loss and the girls’ lacrosse team has what it takes. After a let down on April 5, the team was looking forward to a big win against Richard Montgomery on April 7.
The game did not start well in the first half. The girls quickly went down 2-0 in the first few minutes of the game. Freshman Kirby Child started the Patriots off with a goal in the second quarter to make the score 3-1 at half. “That goal was huge and the momentum seemed to be in our favor,” freshman Jordyn Delo said.
The girls continued to fight after the half scoring two straight goals to tie it up at three. Freshman Kelly Baldwin and Eleni Jones added the clutch goals. The Rocket girls came out firing in the fourth; they added a goal early in the quarter and then put it away with a goal late. The game ended in a 5-3 Rockets victory. “We played well, and we worked so hard, the loss definitely hurts,” Jones said.
Their next game was against a competitive Quince Orchard squad on April 9. After a hard week of preparation, the girls came out with some fire in their hearts. The game remained close in the first half as the squad took a 4-2 lead.
As the game moved along the girls remained on top, and even started to pull away. The squad ended on an amazing run, winning 7-3. The goals came from Child (3), freshman Ella McGrath (2), sophomore Alexa Kantor (1), and sophomore Madison Linn (1). “It felt good to contribute, I really wanted to win this game.” McGrath said.
After their victory against a good Cougars squad, the girls looked ready to take on Northwest. On the back of their last win, the girls came ready and scored early. They played well and took a commanding 8-1 lead at half.
The squad was in control of the game and scored a couple more goals at the beginning of the second half to extend the lead to 10-1. Because of the squad leading by such a significant number, they were told by Coach Lauren Zucconi to settle the ball. The girls controlled the ball the rest of the game and continued on, winning the game 12-4. Linn lead the team with four goals. “I felt that we played well, but we have to continue to ride these wins,” Linn said.
The girls were even more ready for their rival Churchill on April 25. They came in riding this hot streak. The game was one for the ages. It remained close the whole entire game. There were a total of six lead changes throughout the whole game. After half the game was in a tie at 3-3. “It was tight, and the intensity rose,” freshman Lauren Katz said.
It continued to go back and forth, and the girls took a lead with 12 minutes to go. Two minutes later, the Bulldogs responded with a huge goal, and it was a tie again. Neither side could buy a goal, so the game went to overtime. The defense got a huge stop in overtime, and Baldwin threw it up to Linn. From there Linn threw it to Child, who passed it to McGrath for the win. “It was so much fun to beat our rival; the overtime win showed resilience and determination,” McGrath said.
