One of the big additions to Las Vegas’ public scene over the last two years has been the Sphere entertainment venue in the heart of Paradise, Nevada. The $ 2.3 billion project, brought on by Sphere Entertainment, seats approximately 18,000 people and serves as home to various events, ranging from concerts to sporting events. Now, Sphere Entertainment is looking to bring that excitement over to the East Coast as they announced a new “mini-sphere” set to be built in the National Harbor.
According to the office of Governor Wes Moore, the “mini-sphere” will be located adjacent to the MGM National Harbor Hotel & Casino in Prince George’s County. The new venue, approximately one-third the size of the original in Las Vegas and accommodating 6,000 people, is part of a billion-dollar project currently in planning and construction phases, with an anticipated opening for events in early 2030.
The main reason for most of the Sphere’s popularity is due to its unique exosphere and features that create an immersive experience for the viewer. Many of these traits will be carried over to Maryland. These features include a high-resolution LED screen with 4D effects and haptic seating. The Sphere’s exosphere is the world’s largest programmable LED Screen with over 1.2 million LED pucks that have the ability to display over 256 million different colors, according to Sphere Entertainment.
This announcement comes just after the Washington Commanders announced they would also be indulging in the construction of a new stadium on the site of the former RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. With both of these projects underway, students and faculty have strong feelings on the new complexes being built.
The variety of events that will take place at the “mini-sphere” includes comedy shows, sporting events, concerts and other displays of art. Senior Zach King said that he’s excited to see comedian Matt Rife, since he recently announced that he was planning to perform in the area. “I’m really excited to go experience the mini-Sphere because I’ve always wanted to go to the one in Las Vegas, and now I get the opportunity to experience that same thing in Maryland,” King said.
Another student, senior Jonas Klein hopes to see sports events. Klein said, “I really hope that the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) comes to the mini-sphere because they usually don’t come to D.C., and I feel like it would be pretty coo.l”
One of the more enticing aspects of the “mini-Sphere” is the profit that it will generate and the impact that it will have on the economy. According to Sphere Entertainment, the “mini-Sphere” plans to generate between $1.3-1.5 billion and could create approximately 4,000 new jobs for construction workers during the building process. Personal finance teacher Christopher Thompson said, “I think that it will be exciting for the economy and good for the state as a whole.”
Overall, the Sphere in Las Vegas serves as a massive artistic canvas that allows for a plethora of events to take place and should serve as a social centerpiece that attracts students and teachers alike.
