Local shops closing, opening

Francesca’s closed its Rio location in Gaithersburg on Feb. 3. Formerly at 9 Grand Corner Avenue, this boutique had clothes, jewelry and accessories.

Corner Bakery
Corner Bakery is closing at Gaithersburg Rio. The company filed for bankruptcy in February 2023 and was sold at an auction for $15 million in June. The last day was Feb. 24.

Francesca’s
Francesca closed its Rio location on Feb. 3 They filed for bankruptcy. This boutique had clothes, jewelry and accessories. “I used to shop in Francesca’s a lot so I am very disappointed that it is closed,” freshman Jolie Ginsburg said.

Locally Crafted
Locally crafted closed at 201 Boardwalk Place in Gaithersburg Rio lakefront on Dec. 24. They will now move to a new location at 9 Grand Corner Avenue, which was recently home to Francesca’s. They have yet to release an opening date but hope to open in April.

The Container Store
The Container Store was set to open in Downtown Crown on Mar. 2. They have office supplies, organization containers and shelving systems. They offer more than 11,000 organizational products. “I went to the store and it was very big. I liked how there were a lot of things to choose from. They also had great customer service,” freshman Hailey Goldberg said.

Popeyes
Popeyes in the Montgomery Mall food court has closed. Reopening with a new owner is possible “The place was completely empty, I hope it comes back,” Ginsburg said.

Uzu Revolving Sushi
Uzu Revolving Sushi at the shops at Congressional Village on Rockville Pike is opening. A conveyor belt will rotate around the restaurant, allowing customers to grab food as it passes by. An opening date has yet to be set.

Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream
Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream shop is now open in Fallsgrove. The shop has many flavors and ice cream cookies or brownie sandwiches.

7-Eleven
7-Eleven closed in Montgomery Mall on Feb. 1. This location opened in 2020 and had drinks, snacks, food and medicine.

Okaeri Japanese Cafe
Okaeri Japanese Cafe is opening soon in Rockville. The cafe offers desserts and fruit sandwiches. The opening date is not available.

California Tortilla
California Tortilla closed at 199 E Montgomery Avenue in Rockville on Feb. 1. They serve burritos, quesadillas and salads. There are currently more than 50 locations in the DMV.

Teazzi
Teazzi Tea Shop is to open in Bethesda at 4941 Elm Street. They will serve milk tea, lattes and lemonades. An opening date is not available.

Boomerangs
Boomerangs Consignment Shop located at 16807 Crabbs Branch Way is permanently closed. They sold women’s clothing, accessories, jewelry and shoes.
