Running into SGA elections
The Student Government Association is a group of diverse students who work together on various school and community projects throughout the year with the main goal of providing a positive impact. Elections are held every year for SGA representatives who feel they are ready to be active leaders and decision-makers within the school. During the elections process, students are given roughly a month to advertise their campaigns. Following that, elections occur and the students are given the opportunity to choose who they want to represent them. The positions to vote for are co-president (two candidates share the position), treasurer and secretary.
This year, there are four candidates running for the position of co-president, junior Maya Gottesman, junior Carli Katz, junior Vivek Majumdar and junior Jessica Winson.
Gottesman has been a part of SGA for two years and next year will be her third. She is running for this position because she has felt the spirit has always been a part of her life and wants to keep building on the base we already have at the school. “I’m planning along with my fellow officers and classmates on implementing more spirit days and philanthropic activities, also collaborating with more Wootton clubs to give all Patriots the high school experience they deserve,” Gottesman said.
Katz is another candidate for co-president. She has also been a part of SGA since her sophomore year. Her favorite part of being in SGA is planning fun events that she can see making the student body happier and more engaged. “SGA has changed my high school experience because it has taught me how to be a leader and how to implement ideas as well as provided me with a close-knit group of lifelong friends,” Katz said.
She is planning to implement new fun school events that students have been asking for, educational events, and to increase the amount of advocacy for both SGA and students.
Majumdar is the third candidate for co-president. “I ran for this position because I feel like I have the experience and the drive to make SGA a student government organization where our first and foremost concern is making sure our students feel included, heard and represented in everything we do,” Majumdar said.
If he wins he would like to do everything in his power to bridge that gap with more communication and opportunities for students to talk with the SGA about what they want and what they expect.
The last candidate running for co-president is Winson. She wanted to run for this position to have a bigger part in the things we do as an SGA and connect with different school organizations, students and staff. “If I win, I want to get more student input and interaction between the student body and the SGA so that our students are more excited and willing to participate in these events. I also want to work with the athletic teams in some way to increase attendance at games and events. Speaking as someone who does not play the most popular sports, it’s much more exciting and encouraging to play when there are lots of people to cheer you on,” Winson said.
Running for the position of the treasurer is sophomore Naomi Esterowitz, sophomore Lily King and junior Lauren Povich. SGA treasurer is a position that takes care of school finances and is in charge of all of SGA’s spending and fundraisers.
King has been a part of SGA since the beginning of her sophomore year. King believes that being a part of SGA means not only being a leader but also being a learner. SGA has changed her high school experience by opening doors to friendships with new people, increasing her leadership and communication skills, and giving her a reliable group of people she can always go to. “If I win, my dedication to bettering our school will show, and I want to make everyone proud. I am planning on implementing more school-wide fundraisers to raise money that can be put to what people in our own school care about along with the charities we donate to,” King said.
Esterowitz is a proud member of varsity field hockey and tennis. She has been a part of SGA since the beginning of her sophomore year. Esterowitz wanted to run for treasurer because she wanted a closer connection to the decision process in SGA. If she wins she wants to make sure that all of the money is organized and allotted to the right places, whether that be money going toward school functions and dances and such, or to a charity organization that students feel strongly about.
Povich has been a part of SGA for two years She believes that she is good for the position due to being good with money and having a passion for this position. Povich wants to implement more restaurant fundraisers as well as allocate money to school projects like bathroom improvements.
The last position students are running for is secretary. The three students running are sophomore Rhea Chelar, junior William (Bill) Godnick and junior Allison (Allie) Museles.
Chelar has been a part of SGA for a year and her favorite part is being able to help others and create events that benefit the entire community. Chelar wants to implement better communication methods between students and the SGA so that SGA events can better represent what the students want. She feels as if SGA has made her a more confident person because it allows her to express her creativity. It has also made her a more personable person by answering people’s questions about events. “I want to see more input from Wootton students and more activities throughout the year. I also want to see better communication within the community. Wootton students should have more opportunities to speak up about their concerns as well,” Chelar said.
Godnick has been a part of SGA for two years and his favorite part has been planning and being a part of the pep rallies. “I am running for this position as I want to bring more unity to the Wootton student body to keep students up to date with the SGA’s projects,” Godnick said.
If he wins the election, he would like to see students become more spirited and supportive of each other so that we can all achieve our goals in high school.
The final candidate for secretary is Museles. This is her first year at SGA and it has changed her high school experience by meeting so many amazing people as well as learning the importance of leadership. Museles is running because she wants to make sure the student body is involved and is open to sharing their ideas more with her.
Elections will be held on May 4 and 5.
