Varsity hockey ends season on high note
Varsity hockey closed out the season with a playoff loss against Blair 7-3 to conclude their season with a record of 4-6-2 with wins against Sherwood, BCC, St. Johns, and Rockville/Magruder. They fell short to Richard Montgomery, Georgetown Prep, Churchill, Walter Johnson Quince Orchard, and B-CC. Their ties of the season were with Whitman and Churchill. The team has allowed 54 goals and has scored 39 goals. Senior Nathan Barrow and junior Conor Harris both lead the team with 16 points each as they both have identical stats with 10 goals and six assists.
Barrow and JHarris have consistently been the key to the team’s wins this season. They have combined for 20 of the team’s total 39 goals. Barrow is playing in his final season and said he has enjoyed every moment on the ice with his teammates and coaches. “Obviously this isn’t how we wanted the season to end but I am so proud of the progress we have made and I’m sure this team next year will make me proud,” Barrow said.
Harris said that next season he’s going to be the main player on this team so he knows that he will need to keep working hard in order to set the bar for the team. “I am looking very forward to being the team leader next season because I know that my teammates look up to me and I am going to have to be the best captain possible, which means leading practices and setting a good example for the underclassmen,” Harris said.
Senior Sophia Kaplunovich said she has enjoyed her tenure with the hockey team and saddended by head coach Alex Parker leaving the team. Parker has been a head coach for four years and has been coaching hockey for five years. “We love coach Parker and we love what he has done for the team and we wish him the best of luck as he moves forward to his new chapter of coaching,” Kaplunovich said.
Senior Goalie Julian Piche finished the season with a 4-3-1 record with a 3.88 Goals Against Average. Piche doesn’t go to Wootton but that did not stop him from making memories and making new friends throughout the season. Piche knew it wouldn’t be easy coming into a new team not knowing anyone and thinking the chemistry would already be there. Piche knew he had to work hard not only on the ice but in the locker room. “This was such a memorable experience for me because I had to come into a new locker room and make new friends with my teammates and coaches,” Piche said.
