The movie Eternals, directed by Chloé Zhao, was released on Nov. 5, and is the newest movie in the Marvel cinematic universe to hit theaters. It takes place after Avengers: Endgame. As of Dec. 9, the film has taken in $385 million at the box office.

The Eternals, who are immortal and powerful branches of humanity with superpowers created to protect the human race from the monster deviants, are living peacefully and individually with their own lives and keeping everything under control, when an unnatural event causes them to reassemble and figure out how to stop the threat.

It stars an impressively high number of A-list actors and actresses including Angelina Jolie who plays Thena, Richard Madden who plays Ikaris, Gemma Chan who plays Sersi, and Salma Hayek who plays Ajak. Additionally, the movie’s cast includes Kit Harrington, Don Lee, Barry Keoghan, Lauren Ridloff, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry and Bill Skarsgård.

The characters who are Eternals in the movie are inspired by Greek mythology and each of the characters’ names resemble different Greek gods and goddesses. However, in the movie, a bit of humor is portrayed when the Eternals say that Greek mythology was inspired by them.

This movie had mixed reviews, and the tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a low score of 48%. “It is an OK movie but the characters didn’t grab me and the plot was too drawn out,” Jackal K. Cooper, a Rotten Tomatoes reviewer, said.

However, others liked the movie for these very reasons. “I really liked the movie because of the new characters and the exciting plot,” junior Tyler Cosgrove said.

The movie had an overall positive response with the audience score being 78%. “Marvel does it again! Worth the watch, for sure. Great choice for the cast and music. I would watch it again,” verified Rotten Tomatoes reviewer Katie said.

In fact, a highly anticipated new chance to see the characters is expected to appear in the next few years. Since Marvel hasn’t confirmed an official release date yet and the Marvel release schedule is packed until 2023, the wait will be at least two years for a second Eternals movie.

The character Makkari, who is one of the Eternals, played by Lauren Ridloff, makes history as the first deaf superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This was well received and excited fans with Marvel’s increased diversity and representation in their movies.

Also frequently talked about in the movie is the post credit scene, where a new character played by Harry Styles is introduced. Starfox, Thanos’s brother, appears in front of the Eternals with shocking information. He is expected to have a bigger role in the second movie.

The movie was overall a success, and a return of the characters is something that fans are looking forward to. This new movie in Phase 4 of Marvel broke barriers and introduced new and exciting characters, plots and aspects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
