Track hosted their season opener on Mar. 25 and had a promising start to the season with the athletes looking strong and ready for the season. The track athletes had a good meet with over 50 athletes breaking personal records in the 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200 and long jump.
Sophomore Adam Idrissa competed in the 100m and 200m sprint events setting a PR in both the 100m and 200m. Idrissa said he felt that despite the personal record, the results could be improved and don’t reflect the amount of effort he has put into his training, causing him to work harder. ”I’m feeling great about the upcoming season,” Idrissa said.
Idrissa has been participating in private sessions to prepare for future events and improve his times to satisfy his determination for better times. Idrissa also wants to help himself out of practice by focusing on the nutrition aspect of his running and establishing a regular morning routine. “I’ve been having private training sessions in preparation for the next meet,” Idrissa said.
Sophomore Jack Zincke competed in the 4x800m relay and the open 800m and was on the winning team in the relay and got sixth overall in the 800m. Zincke said he was glad to win a race and was happy with his time. He also is prepared to train harder for upcoming races. “I’m going to train and get faster and I’m excited for the next races,“ Zincke said.
Zincke is working hard to make his time better by going to training each day, listening to the coach and buying new shoes for track. “I’m getting better by training every day and listening to the coach’s training plan,” Zincke said.
Junior Varun Rajesh competed in the 4x800m, getting a win in the relay and the open 800m and seventh overall in the 800m. Rajesh said he was happy with his first meet and he hopes to improve aspects of his running for his next event. “I think I did well for my first time running in an event and hope to improve some Important aspects of my running,” Rajesh said.
Junior Nathan Downie ran the 1600m and 3200m, winning both races. Downie said he was happy with the times and feels more prepared than ever heading into a season and wants to shine during the season. “I am more fit than I have ever been so it’s going to be a good season,” Downie said
Sophomore Biruk Alemayehu competed in the 400m sprint race finishing 12th: During the race Alemayehu twisted his ankle. Despite the injury sustained halfway through the race, Alemayehu said he was proud of how he ran and how he fought hard to finish. “The race was good because I pushed through despite the pain,“ Alemayehu said.
Alemayehu wants to run shorter distances in future races hoping that it will show the best of his abilities on the track. Alemayehu said that competing in shorter races will benefit him more and let him shine. “I will run shorter distances in future races to perform better,” Alemayehu said.
