Apple TV’s new comedy, Ted Lasso concluded their final episode of the first season on Oct. 2. On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season was rated 98%.

The show is based off of a series of commercials that NBC aired when they started to show Premier League soccer matches on the network in 2013. Originally, the NBC ads were just a way of trying to encourage fans to watch the Premier League, but after an overwhelming amount of positive response, Apple decided to use some of the same cast in the commercials and start the new television series. Ted Lasso.

In the United States soccer is not widely popular among sports fans, as football dominates the charts. So, a show about British soccer didn’t seem like it was going to win over many American viewers.

Former professional NFL player and high school soccer player Pat Mcafee broadcasted his praise for the comedy live on his radio show, (The Pat Mcafee Show 2.0,) to 10,000 viewers. his praise for the comedy. Mcafee said, “This show has no right to be as good as it is…” and would later mention talk about how he enjoyed has high praise for most of the episodes.

The show is about a football coach in the United States (Jason Sudekis) with no knowledge or experience with soccer who gets hired to coach a football (soccer) club in England. He is equipped with an assistant coach Nate (Nick Mohammed) who is quiet but offers a good amount of soccer knowledge to help him. The show also includes a and the crazy team owner, Rebecca (Hannah Waddington), who wants to tank the team on purpose. Sophomore Josh Mirsky said, “Ted Lasso is a very good series and I think it was very good for the sport of soccer. As a soccer player in America I feel like my sport isn’t talked about or getting the representation it deserves compared to England and this portrays that. A lot of my friends are starting to watch the Premier League and play pick up soccer.”

The comedy combines elements from multiple popular shows and movies. The outline can draw similarities to the movie Major League, where an owner purposefully wants to tank her team. The main character, Ted Lasso, draws comparisons to Michael Scott from The Office as they both aren’t fit for their jobs but are brought in anyway and are tasked to lead a team of their own.“I’m a big Office fan and I love Jason Sudekis so I really wanted to watch Ted Lasso. It was really funny and better than I expected it would be” sophomore Gillian Berman said.

Although no scenes have been shot yet, it is rumored that the next season of Ted Lasso has been written. On the Unlocking Us with Brené Brown podcast, Jason Sudekis and Brendan Hunt said that they expect a second season to premiere in August 2021.
