JV football faced off against BCC on Oct. 5. Leading up to this game, both teams were winless. It was a back and forth scoring game as Wootton continued to show their determination to stay in it. The team came up short losing, 34-20.
Sophomore quarterback/cornerback Ben Ehrman rushed for a 50-yard touchdown and had an interception. “I played defense for the first time and it was difficult playing both offense and defense the whole game. I thought we played good, but hopefully we will come out with a win next time,” Ehrman said.
Sophomore running back Zion Johnson had a strong performance offensively, also blocking a punt on the defensive end. “He cut through the defense like butter, scoring Wootton’s second touchdown,” head coach Ralph Bernando said.
Ehrman has been called up to varsity for practices and potentially the next game. “It depends if our other quarterbacks are healthy. I’m not sure if I will be playing JV or varsity next week,” Ehrman said.
The team study hall before practice has been cancelled because the team was disruptive and left a mess. “I really enjoyed the study hall because I got my homework done before practice so that I could go to bed after,” freshman center Max Mirsky said.
Mirsky plays a key role on the team constantly snapping the ball to the quarterback. “It is a lot of pressure because I have a big job to do on every play, but I’ve gotten better with practice and it takes some of the pressure off. My position is underrated because fans are usually focused on the quarterback and receivers,” Mirsky said.
The team played against Walter Johnson on Oct. 11. The defense only gave up one touchdown, keeping the team in the game. The team rushed for over 150 yards, but was unable to score, losing 14-0. They struggled to throw the ball without Ehrman, giving up a pick six. “I thought we had a good defensive performance, but struggled to get the ball into the endzone. Our linemen did a really good job at blocking,” Mirsky said.
The losing streak continues after losses to BCC and WJ, but this is not the end and the boys have not given up. “We will keep playing hard,” Mirsky said.
The game against Richard Montgomery on Oct. 19, was too late to be included in this issue.
