The varsity co-ed golf team is off to a slower start than expected, sitting at 8-6-1. They are in third place with 780 strokes, trailing Sherwood by 19 strokes and Churchill by 36 strokes. They’ve played five matches and have one remaining.

Junior Ethan Chelf is leading Wootton and eight overall in the county in strokes with 150. He was looking forward to the final match on Oct. 1, and is hoping for to end on a win. “I hope we can win this game because it would be good to go into divisionals off a win. I also hope that we play well enough to move up to second or first place instead of third,” Chelf said.

Seniors Jack Rothenberg and Ethan Shulman played in their first matches. Both Shulman and Rothenberg played hard in the absence of juniors Ryan Feldman and Chelf. Shulman shot a 44 and Rothenberg shot a 59. “I’m happy with how we played considering this was our first start. Hopefully there are many more to come,” Shulman said.

Districts is coming up on Oct. 7 and states is on Oct. 28 and 30. To qualify for states, Wootton must place in the top four teams. Golf is heading into districts with the expectation to do well with the talented players on the team but the main problem over the years has been performing in these big moments. Senior Ben Bloch believes that this is the year that they win states. “We always have the talent to do well but just choke in states. This year, we are winning big,” Bloch said.

Wootton won districts last year led by Chelf shooting a 70. He’s ranked fourth in the state overall and is being looked at by multiple colleges such as Maryland, Rice and Virginia.

Junior Brendan Eig has burst onto the scene this fall season. This is his third year on the team and not only did he make his first match this season, he’s made all five matches this year and is looking to put a good round together at districts
