Patriots rattle off eight consecutive victories after 1-2 start

The varsity baseball team is scorching hot. After early season struggles put them at a record of 1-2, since then they have won eight games in a row. The patriots have not lost a game since they played churchill Mar. 28.

The squad certainly found a spark after these early season struggles. “After losing to Churchill, we realized we needed to put a lot more work in. We came together as a team more than ever and have not looked back,” Senior Harrison Cance said.

On Apr. 3, the boys faced off against our down the street rival, Quince Orchard. The patriots won in dominant fashion. The final score was 7-0. They had two games in three days. They played Gaithersburg in Apr. 5 and won 3-2.”It’s always nice to get a win, but we have a lot of games before the break so we can’t lose focus,” senior Ryan Mariani said.

The patriots headed to Northwest on Apr. 8. The game was scoreless through the first five innings. In the sixth, the patriots turned it on and punched in three runs. This lead was enough to ensure their victory, they put up a shutout and won 3-0. “We went in and did our jobs, I’m glad we came out on top,” sophomore Nate Bowman said.

The patriots road trip continued on Apr. 10 at Clarksburg high school. The patriots took and early lead, scoring a run in the second inning. The next two innings were scoreless. Then boys then caught fire,with seven runs in the final three innings. “Our team is playing great baseball right now. We can’t get too high emotionally, winning is great but we need to continue to take care of business,” Junior Andrew Misovec said.

Next the patriots squared up against the Blair Blazers on Apr. 12. This was the final matchup before spring break. The flow of the game seemed a bit peculiar. After the first inning the game was scoreless. Both teams played lock down defense. After five innings, both teams held each other scoreless. In the sixth something must’ve changed, because the boys set a season record. Nine runs were scored in the sixth. The patriots closed out the game well, with a 9-0 victory. When asked about how it feels to be on an eight game win streak, senior Chris Vondas said “It’s the best feeling ever, we knew we were capable of more than we showed early in the season, and we’ve worked so hard since then to get to get to where we are now.”

On Apr. 24, the top two teams in the county faced off. The Patriots faced off against the Whitman Vikings. It was a hard fought game, with the lead changing five times. The boys ultimately fell short of victory in extra innings, 7-6.
