Boys’ wrestling wrapped up their long season with a tri-meet against Quince Orchard and Northwest on Feb. 2.
Their first match of the meet was against Quince Orchard. Sophomore Eric Liau wrestled in the 106 weight class, sophomore Jason Liau wrestled in the 113 spot and junior Ben Bloch wrestled in the 120 weight class. Junior Charlie Cornfield wrestled in the 152 spot, junior Henry Wooley wrestled in the 160 weight class, junior Brian Lee wrestled at 220 and finally junior Benham Sari was in the 280 weight class.
Bloch lost in the 120 weight class and Lee fell to the other 220 competitor. Besides these two loses, the Patriots were able to put together a string of wins in the other weight classes. However, due to the undermanned wrestling team, they have to forfeit a lot of weight classes so the Patriots fell to the Cougars. “ It was a good match overall. We came up with a couple wins and it was a good meet to end our season with,” Sari said.
The second half of the meet was against Northwest. All of the wrestlers wrestled the same weight class as the previous match. Eric Liau and Jason Liau won their matches while Bloch, Cornfield, Wooley and Lee fought hard, but fell to their opponents. Despite the Patriots fight, they finished the meet 0-2 after falling to Northwest.
Their previous match was against Whitman on Jan. 29. In this match Bloch wrestled 113, Eric Liau wrestled 106 and Jason Liau wrestled 120. All of the other players remained in their same weight classes. Cornfield, Lee and Sari fell to their opponents, but the rest of the Patriots came out with a win. Once again, due to the multiple forfeits, the Patriots fell to the Vikings. “We played a good match and even though we lost I am proud of my teammates,” Bloch said.
The Patriots also had a tri-meet against Paint Branch and Clarksburg on Jan. 26. Their first half of the match was against Paint Branch. Lee, Cornfield and Sari fell to their competitors, but the other weight classes finished with a win. Against Clarksburg the lineup stayed the same. Bloch, Lee and Sari all came up short in this match. After fighting hard both matches, it still wasn’t enough and the Patriots finished 0-2. “This was another tough series of matches for us, but every match I know my teammates are working hard and everyone has each others’ backs,” Wooley said.
As the season has come to a end Jason and Eric Liau, twin brothers, finished with a combined record of 60-1 in all of their matches.
