After a long season of weekly practices, Friday night football games, as well as hard work and dedication, varsity cheer took on the most important competition of the season.
The Montgomery County Division One County Championship took place at Blair at 6:30 on Oct. 27. The girls’ gave it their all and ended up taking the third place trophy, having Damascus and Clarksburg the only schools to defeat them.
The girls’ performance had only one mistake in their routine, a flyer coming down a little early in their main stunt. “I am very happy with how we did, although I know that one mistake could have been prevented we still did an amazing job and I am so proud of the team for having so much confidence and giving it our all,” sophomore Danielle Berman said.
Out of Division One, Two and Three, the girls are in fifth place in the county and heard from several Maryland county competitions that they will be advancing to the regionals competition that takes place on Nov. 3. In order to advance to this competition, the girls had one of the top 15 highest scores out of all Division One participants in the state. “After all the work we put in, I am happy our performance was enough to advance us to the regionals competition because we have all put in so much work this season and I know how bad we all want to make it there,” sophomore Emma Hoffman said.
The main goal the girls had walking into Blair was to take first place and automatically advance to the semi finals. Although not completing that goal, the team was still satisfied with the outcome and are hoping to redeem themselves at regionals. “I was hoping to come out on top but I am so proud of the team for giving it their all and for placing in the end because even third place feels great,” junior captain Antonia Roach said.
Since they advanced, the girls’ goal is to now advance to finals, the state competition as they did the previous year. The state competition will be held, Nov. 10. “Advancing to both regionals and states last year felt so great and I hope to get that same feeling this year,” senior Maddy Elster said.
