The varsity girls’ soccer team has had a busy few weeks, facing four opponents that tested their endurance and teamwork. Despite one tough overtime loss, the team bounced back with three solid wins, continuing to build confidence as the season moves forward.
The Patriots started this stretch with a game against Quince Orchard on Sept. 30. The match was close from start to finish. The Patriots managed to tie the game in regulation, but Quince Orchard scored in overtime to win 2-1. Even though it ended in a loss, the game showed the Patriots’ ability to compete at a high level against one of their toughest opponents. “I think for most of the game against Quince Orchard we outplayed them and worked our hardest, but it was hard because one mistake in overtime led to an undeserving loss,” senior Megan Lomotan said.
A few days later, the Patriots hosted Watkin’s Mill on Oct. 4 and came out ready to respond. From the opening whistle, the Patriots controlled possession and moved the ball well through midfield. Their strong offensive play and defensive plays led to an 8-1 win. The team’s passing and communication were key factors in the victory. “Winning against Watkin’s Mill gave us some confidence back after taking a tough loss to hard competition,” Lomotan said.
Next, the Patriots took on Magruder on Oct. 6 in another close contest. The match was competitive from the start, with both teams creating scoring opportunities. After finishing regulation tied 1-1, the Patriots wasted no time in overtime, scoring within the first seven minutes to secure a 2-1 victory. The win showed the team’s ability to stay composed in high-pressure situations. “The Magruder game was very stressful especially going into overtime but winning was very exciting and celebrating as a team was a memory I’ll never forget,” junior Anna Sofronas said.
The Patriots wrapped up this stretch of games against Northwood on Saturday Oct. 11, looking to continue their momentum. The Patriots maintained strong possession and had several good scoring chances, finishing with a 8-0 win. The team’s balanced effort on both ends of the field rounded out a successful run of matches. “We finished the game with an 8-0 mercy win. It felt very accomplishing to score twice against them,” Sofronas said.
Across these four games, the Patriots demonstrated progress, teamwork and confidence. With a mix of experienced players and new contributors, the team continues to improve each week. As the season moves forward, the girls look to build on heir recent success and stay competitive in the final stretch of regular season games, with their next game on Oct. 14 away versus Rockville and their final regular season game, at home versus Richard Montgomery on Oct.16. “I’m feeling bummed that the regular season’s coming to a close but I’m looking forward to hopefully advancing far in playoffs. It’s so sad knowing that this team will not be the same next year with all of the great seniors leaving with all their talent and contributions,” freshman Miranda Kveydys said.
