When talking about the football team, one name constantly comes up: senior Ashton Ingram. A versatile player who starts at both wide receiver and kick/punt returner, Ingram has been instrumental to the team’s identity.
Ingram’s football journey began at the age of five; inspired by football legends Julio Jones and Tavon Austin, he spent hours watching games on TV. He grew a love for the game and wanted to excel. “Julio Jones and Tavon Austin were my role models. I constantly watched their highlights, and that led me to start playing,” Ingram said.
His approach to the game is centered around faith. Before every game, he finds a moment to open his Bible and draw strength from its words. “I have a Bible in my locker that I read before every game because I believe with faith, I’m unstoppable,” Ingram said.
To handle the pressure that comes with playing football, Ingram stays composed through his faith. He knows his teammates and coaches rely on him to deliver every game, but prayer and inner confidence keep him focused. “I handle pressure like most other things. I read my Bible and pray. I don’t have to worry about scoring a touchdown, I just have to have the confidence of knowing that I’m better than everyone on the field,” Ingram said.
Speed is what Ingram considers his greatest weapon, allowing him to turn a routine play into a highlight. But he sees himself as more than just an electric player; he also embraces leadership as a part of his role. “I see myself as both a leader and a playmaker. I know the team counts on me in more ways than just making big plays to help them win,” Ingram said.
This season, Ingram has already had a host of standout moments that show his impact on the gridiron. In week two against Damascus, he ignited the crowd with a 60-yard touchdown, spinning through and running over defenders in the process. “That game against Damascus was probably Ashton’s best,” senior football player Yesh Tafa said.
The best part about football for Ingram, however, is the team around him. After years of playing alongside the same people, they have forged bonds that go beyond the turf. “The best thing about this group is our bond. We’re all friends off the field, and we’ve known each other for years. We’re almost like family now,” Ingram said.
Football has also taught Ingram lessons that go beyond sports. He knows that for success to come, everyone must contribute. “The biggest lesson football has taught me is that everyone needs to do their job in order for the team to be successful,” Ingram said.
Looking toward the future, Ingram’s goals are to find the endzone for double-digit touchdowns, be the best kick returner in the state, and reach All-Division and All-County honors. He also wants to take his talents to the next level: collegiate football. “I can definitely see myself playing college football,” Ingram said.
Even with all of his success, Ingram hasn’t forgotten what he truly plays for. He gives credit to his parents for their sacrifices and continued support. “My biggest motivation is my parents, for everything they sacrifice for me to be successful. I have to make them proud,” Ingram said.
