Gloco comes back for its third year at this school on Oct. 10 and this year the homecoming theme combines music and festival activities: “Glochella” is a combination of the traditional glow-in-the-dark Gloco and the popular California festival Coachella.
Every year SGA plans a big party that takes place after the homecoming football game, in the lower gym. The party is glow-in-the-dark, but also has a theme attached to it for decoration, advertisement and spirit purposes. During the pilot year of Gloco back in 2023, the theme was Gloco Lights Through the Cities and last year’s theme was Gloco Out of This World. There is food, music, an inflatable, a photobooth and decorations. “Every year we always try to add a twist in Gloco to make it more exciting and different, so this year after doing a class vote we came to the decision that Glochella would be a new and fun theme for Gloco,” senior SGA member Jilli Nalibotsky said.
Coachella is a well-known, annual festival that takes place in Indio, CA, and showcases musical and artistic talent. The festival takes place in April during two consecutive weekends and has known and emerging artists performing, while also incorporating large-scale art installations. Former student and SGA member Natalie Jack attended Coachella last year and said, “Coachella was such a fun and surreal experience and it was also cool because Travis Scott designed the layout of Coachella’s decorations last year, so it’s going to be nice to see how SGA can design Glochella to fit the vibes of the student body.”
With Coachella being mainly focused on music, SGA said that they assigned music genres for each grade as part of their spirit theme. The themes are Rock n’ Roll for the seniors, RnB and Rap for the juniors, Country for the sophomores and Pop for the freshman. These themes are to be used for each grade to decorate hallways and for students to dress up as during the spirit week. “I’m really excited to see people dress up on theme this year after the football game and to see which section of Gloco will be everyone’s favorite,” SGA co-president Ryan Shin said.
Students have feelings about having a traditional homecoming instead of a post-football game-party in the gym. Seniors have experienced a traditional dance for their freshmen homecoming and have said it didn’t live up to the expectations that juniors, sophomores and freshmen think it would. “I’m excited to see all of SGA’s hard work come to life and see people enjoy the outcome of our many hours of effort and collaboration,” junior SGA member Iago Wolmetz.
SGA posted a poll on their instagram page over the summer that asked if students would prefer having a traditional homecoming dance or Gloco and the majority voted Gloco. Since that has been decided already, there are events leading up to the party to look out for.
There is the fall pep rally that will take place on Oct. 10 with the usual activities including performances, sports introductions and a game. The week of the homecoming football game is another event to mark because students are expected to dress up on theme each day and partake in the activities in the Commons. Students can pre-purchase their tickets on School Cash Online for $10 until the day of the event and tickets will also be sold at the door for $20.
