Thank you, Common Sense.
Being a part of this amazing group tapped into a skill that I never thought I possessed, I found a passion for covering topics surrounding this school and reporting passions of my own to this school.
I joined Common Sense this year as a senior, making me a one-and-done member of the staff, but I still had lots of fun memories, from the weekly activity of the day, delivering paper prints to classes, and interviewing Wootton’s most interesting people.
The biggest thing that Common Sense has given me was a platform to launch my podcast “Game Time with Jack and Josh,” which started in December of this school year. It has grown exponentially. I got to discuss sports with amazing people here at this school, and it gave me the chance to talk to a professional racing driver and broadcaster in James Hinchcliffe. For that, I can’t thank Common Sense enough.
I want to further express my gratitude and appreciation to my counselor, Daniella Bienstock, because without her, I would have never joined Common Sense, thank you so much.
Mrs. Starr, you are one of, if not the most wonderful and down-to-earth teacher I have ever had. Thank you for all the support you have given me in my short time at Common Sense.
The only regret I have is not joining Common Sense sooner. I implore anyone to at least look into taking journalism and see how they like it and tap into their inner journalist.
As I sit here writing this, listening to my end-of-school playlist, I just can’t imagine how dull my senior year would have been. Advice I would give to every student is, do everything you can, take every opportunity, win the day, win today.
Reflecting on my Common Sense career, the favorite articles I’ve written are my Grand Prix of Baltimore retrospective. I love talking about motorsports, and especially IndyCar, so being able to write about a topic close to my heart was rewarding. I also enjoyed my lacrosse season preview. When preparing to write for that article, I actually attended tryouts and observed what was happening, and it made me feel like an ESPN reporter covering a team’s spring training.
I don’t know if I will fully pursue journalism in college, but I definitely will be intrigued by it and have great respect for it. I would love to cover motorsports and soccer if I do take that path.
For my future endeavors, “Game Time” will return next school year with a new co-host alongside current host junior Jack White, and I plan to create a new podcast at college this fall.
The checkered flag is waving for my time at Common Sense, and I can’t thank everyone enough for the opportunity to be a part of this family.
