The girls’ varsity lacrosse team finished their season with two hard-fought playoff victories and 3A West regional champion status before falling to Sherwood in the state quarter-final.
Despite ending their regular season with a loss to Bethesda Chevy Chase on May 2, the varsity team defended their home field against Rockville in the regional semi-final on May 9, winning 16-5. Junior Maya Bellamy led the team with seven goals, sophomore Emma King scored five goals, and junior Emory Scofield was the team’s assist leader with three. “Our coach was really proud of us and was happy we had a lot of good plays and worked well together,” senior captain Paige Euler said.
The varsity team showed their positive energy immediately, taking the lead early in the game. Euler is an attacker, and her goals uplift the team and help them to succeed. “I was so proud of my teammates for working so hard during the game, and I loved to see the good energy and high spirits throughout,” Euler said.
Similarly, senior captain Isabella Davis-Astrada was proud of the result of the game. As an attacker, she also looks to increase the team’s score sheet in any way possible. She had an assist against Rockville. “I thought the game went really well with us leading by over 10 points, and I was very proud of my teammates’ performance,” Davis-Astrada said.
After advancing to the regional final, the varsity team defeated Magruder in an away game on May 12 with a final score of 12-7. The game was closer than their first playoff game and required focus and determination from the varsity team. Scofield led the team’s scoresheet with five goals and an assist, and Bellamy followed closely behind her with four goals. King and Euler also supported the team’s attacking unit, scoring two goals and one goal, respectively. Sophomore Malia Bellamy, junior Addison Purvis, and Davis-Astrada each had an assist, supporting the team’s crucial victory. “It was a closer game than we would’ve hoped and caused some stress at the end, but we managed to push through and win, receiving the second regional champion title in a row,” Davis-Astrada said.
Despite their playoff success, their coach felt they still had room for improvement before they took on Sherwood in the state quarter-finals. “She was relieved that we won, but had some positive criticism about certain plays in the game, [and] intended to improve our performance in the upcoming, much more challenging game against Sherwood,” Davis-Astrada said.
The varsity team lost to Sherwood on May 14 with a final score of 17-5. Despite their heartbreaking loss, sophomore Annika Gully is happy with how the season went and looks forward to her next two seasons with the team. “[I am] proud of the team’s hard work and looking forward to the future of the program,” Gully said.
