The girls’ varsity lacrosse team has had seven wins and five losses this past season. As the playoffs begin to start, the team is gelling and chemistry is at an all time high. The pressure of the playoffs is bringing out the best as the heat turns up and the clock ticks for the next game to start.
The regular season for varsity ended Friday, May 2, with a 10-5 loss against Bethesda Chevy Chase. The first playoff game is Friday, May 9, against Rockville, 7 p.m. at home, and the team is hungry for the win. Junior varsity’s season ended with a win on Apr. 26. Sophomores Katie Bardill, Jasmine Wang, Annika Gully and Hannah Yuan scored the winning goals against Richard Montgomery at home.
The varsity team has been able to win a majority of their games this past season. Senior Marissa Cook said, “The season overall has been pretty good. We have had some really strong wins where everything has been able to click, but also some very tough losses.”
Junior Gabriella Gbebry’s position is attack. Her goal is to score goals and create offensive opportunities within the offense zone. “Heading into playoffs, I plan to just do the best I can, work with my team, and put my best effort forward,” Gbebry said.
The team has a positive mindset as they roll into the playoffs. “We are on our way to the playoffs and I know we’re going to do great,” Gbebry said.
The team has been able to come together and create a sense of family and unity. “Since I manage boys’ varsity lacrosse, sometimes I see a quick crossover between the games and interactions with both the teams. The girls are always so upbeat and positive no matter the circumstances,” junior Zoi Bourazani said.
The team believes that there is always room for improvement. “I think we have done a great job connecting with each other and supporting everyone no matter what happens. We could improve by locking in at practice. I really think we just need to listen and try not to goof off,” Cook said.
The team has been able to remain a unit during games and practices. “The team has done well in terms of unity, we are a pretty united team,” Gbebry said.
The varsity team continues to put in the hard work, show up to practice and bring a sense of camaraderie to bring a win home on Friday and continue forward into the playoffs. The playoffs can be an emotional time because of how much time and sweat the girls put into practices and games. It may be even more emotional for the seniors on the team. “It is a bittersweet feeling playing as a senior. It’s crazy how fast the time has gone by. I am trying to soak in every moment, leave it all on the field, and make some lasting memories with my teammates,” Cook said.
