After watching ‘A Minecraft Movie’ I think that the creators had the perfect approach to creating “A Minecraft Movie.” It is meant to be a kids’ movie, full of silly one-liners and jokes, not a complex plot. Through all the hype it gained through social media, it turned into a joke for people to go and watch. Paired with eating pancakes at midnight, for me, it was the perfect watch that came at the perfect time. I had a 10 out of 10 time watching, but my experience may not apply to those who don’t understand the video game.
“A Minecraft Movie” was released in theatres on Apr. 4. The movie stars actors Jason Momoa, Jack Black and Danielle Brooks. With a budget of roughly $150 million, the film was vastly successful at the box office and set a record for the best opening weekend for any video game movie.
The video game, Minecraft, remains the best-selling video game to this day. When fans of the game heard that Warner Bros. and Mojang Studios were collaborating to create a movie, they instantly became excited. Fans’ love for the film began long before it was released in theaters. Sneak peeks of funny clips were leaked, and as they went viral, people on social media began to fall in love. Clips of Black singing and dancing derived from the video game itself. Iconic phrases like “chicken jockey,” and “first we mine, then we craft” became memes online.
After watching the movie, I can confidently say that it was a pleasurable experience. Seeing all the clips posted online in the actual film made me laugh hard. Two things stood out to me while watching the movie. Firstly, from a comedic standpoint, the film was great, but plot-wise, it was not good in the slightest bit. Despite the plot issues, it was the most fun I’ve had watching a movie in a long time.
The first thing to note is that since people seeing this movie had already seen clips of it online, the crowd was clapping, cheering and yelling whenever a viral clip was shown in the movie. While watching the movie, it felt like everyone in the theater was happy, enjoying the cinema that had just laid upon their eyes. For the first time in a theater, I laughed and made friends with strangers. I smiled the whole way through, and I thought about how wholesome the movie is. It is a simple, stupid, funny movie that could make you forget about your C in math class.
The second thing I’d noticed was that the plot was non-existent. I watched the movie twice, and after the first time, I left the theater not knowing what the movie was even about. It wasn’t until the second time that I’d realized what the plot was. The plot is not complex in the slightest bit. If I were someone who did not understand Minecraft, the movie would have been horrible, but since I understood all the references in the movie, it was one of the most pleasurable times I have had watching a movie in a long time.
