The inaugural county sports cup competition has tallied its official results after the winter season and this school remains in last place.
The cup is a competition between five schools in the county, throughout each sports season. The five teams include Wootton, Churchill, Walter Johnson (WJ), Bethesda Chevy Chase (BCC) and Whitman. The competition keeps track of the head-to-head varsity matches each school plays. The athletic directors of the five schools keep track of the record of the matchups between each school, and share it to see which school is the ultimate sports victor.
At the end of the fall season, when scores were last tallied, Churchill was leading the pack, followed by WJ, BCC, Whitman, and lastly, Wootton. Even though this school was in last for the fall, the winter season held hope for student athletes who aspire to come out on top, or at least move up a few spots. “I have confidence in our school’s ability to improve through the winter season,” senior Brandon Luxenberg said.
Despite everyone’s hopes and expectations, this school did not rise at all throughout the winter. After last year’s success with winter sports, it was expected for the school to make a stride in the right direction as the cup continued. However, that was not the case, as through the end of winter, Wootton remained in last by a large margin.
Before the spring season begins, the official scores of the sports cup were recorded. Leading the pack yet again was Churchill. They had a head-to-head record of 43 wins and 27 losses. They have remained on top throughout the entirety of the school year. Coming in next in the rankings is Whitman, performing well with a record of 38 wins and 27 losses. The WJ Wildcats have secured their spot in third, with 31 wins and 24 losses. Right behind WJ is the BCC Barons. They have a close gap with WJ with 31 wins, however, they have five more losses with 29 total.
Holding down the fort in last place is the Patriots. After the fall season, the Patriots held a record of nine wins and 20 losses. There wasn’t much improvement through the winter, as this school held a record of 14 wins and 44 losses through the end of the season. “I think we can do better as a school, we just have to come together and get our scores up,” junior Nathan Downie said.
While the standings don’t look promising, there is still another season to decide the final rankings. However, the Patriots aren’t off to a great start in the spring, as the Patriots hold zero wins and five losses through their first five matches. The most recent matchup came from the baseball team, who lost to Whitman on April 5. Senior Luke Brunner is optimistic about the rest of the year. “Wootton’s ranking will improve by the end of the spring because many Wootton spring sports have strong records,” Brunner said.
