Students participated in the first ever Patriot Games on Friday, Mar. 14, in the stadium, where students got the opportunity to compete in different games with their friends and community.
The idea of Patriot Games came from the show “Squid Games,” which recently released season two. The games were introduced as a part of week two of the SGA spring project, which had an arts and athletics theme. The goal for week two of the spring project was to bring together the school community, according to the Spring Project slides shown during Wellness Wednesday.
Over 150 students got the chance to participate through a Google form that SGA offered to anyone who was interested in participating. “I enjoyed the games because I got to play a fun game with my friends,” junior Liana Usman said.
The games had five different events including red light green light, tug of war, a hula hoop themed game, a relay race and finished off with a box jumping game. Red light green light was the first game where students could move when the light was green but had to stop and stay still while the light was red. Due to this challenge, students were eliminated from the games as they were caught moving while the light was red. Next was tug of war where the remaining students were split into four teams. “Tug of war was the best event because you got to see who was the strongest and it was also funny to see everyone fall down everywhere,” junior Bereket Kebede said.
Followed by tug of war was the group hula hoop game where whoever could not find a group inside of a hula hoop was eliminated. Group numbers were changed after each round and were determined by someone announcing it on the speakers. Following the group hula hoop game was a relay race where contestants split into groups of four and each person had to run a fourth of the track. The last two teams to complete the relay were eliminated.
The last and final game was the box jumping game where the goal was to try not to step on the empty boxes, and if contestants did, then they were eliminated. This game determined the winner of Patriot Games, junior Adam Gelic, shocking the crowd. At first, students were not able to find much success in this challenge but Gelic completed the challenge without messing up once. As a prize for winning, Gelic received Sour Patch Kids, Sour Patch Watermelon, and a Chipotle gift card. “Winning Patriot Games was a surreal moment and I am really happy I won,” Gelic said.
The Patriot Games concluded week two of SGA’s Spring Project. For week three, the theme was career based learning and included three days with opportunities to learn more about specific career fields. Week four was an environment focused week, which had a theme of Patriots staying connected through the environment, and concluded SGA’s spring project.
