Last year, some of the biggest hits included “Dune: Part Two,” “Deadpool and Wolverine,” “Wicked,” “Inside Out 2” and “Moana 2.” 2025 is looking to be even bigger with the blockbuster films set to release this spring and summer.
A film that has already been released this March is “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie.” It is the first theatrically released, fully 2D animated Looney Tunes film and stars Porky Pig and Daffy Duck. It’s a movie that Warner Bros. almost cancelled for a tax write-off, but an independent distributor bought the film. The film wasn’t marketed well, so it’s important for people to see this movie so we can get more 2D animated movies.
A big movie coming out soon is “A Minecraft Movie,” which releases Apr. 3 and stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa. The film has been pretty divisive with its combination of live-action and animation, making the iconic Minecraft characters look grotesque. It was also an odd choice to cast Jack Black as Steve, as all they did was throw a blue shirt on Black and call it a day. They didn’t even bother trimming his beard or hair to look like the character. The costuming budget was just 2 cents and a dream.
In the month of May, Marvel Studios is back with their release of “Thunderbolts*,” releasing May 2. The film centers around Marvel’s anti-heroes coming together to stop a greater threat known as Sentry (Marvel’s version of Superman).
May kicks off the summer movie season with the live-action “Lilo and Stitch” film and “Mission Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” releasing on May 23. Although Disney’s live-action remakes have been disappointing, the trailer for “Lilo and Stitch” looks promising and will hopefully not be as bad as the most recent live-action “Snow White” movie with the horrendous-looking dwarves. On May 30, “Karate Kid: Legends” releases, which brings back Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan training a new student in karate. The film is set to take place after the events of the TV show “Cobra Kai.”
The month of June is bringing another live-action remake with the release of “How to Train Your Dragon” on June 13. While unnecessary, the film looks to be a promising adaptation of the 2010 Dreamworks film.
July is the big summer blockbuster month, kicking off with the latest installment in the “Jurassic Park” franchise with “Jurassic World: Rebirth.” The big movie that I’m most excited for is James Gunn’s “Superman,”the first movie to kick off the new DC Universe franchise reboot, and which looks to be a promising start. The film stars David Corenswet as the titular character and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The film finally brings back a hopeful tone to Superman, rather than the dark and edgy version of Henry Cavill’s Superman. The movie also introduces the best boy in the universe, Krypto, Superman’s dog. The film flies into theaters July 11.
July also brings in the most anticipated Marvel project of the year, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” which will be released on July 26.
